Cast your vote at Pizza Palooza

Pizza makers from northwest Ohio will square off this weekend in a competition to determine who makes the best pies. Pizza Palooza will kick off Friday at Centennial Terrace in Sylvania Township. More than 10,000 people are expected to vote for their favorite pizza vendors, in addition to local chefs and business leaders who will serve as judges. Prizes include bragging rights and trophies. Other highlights include live music and entertainment. Children's activities will take place from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday and Saturday. Tickets are $5 for adults, $3 for children 5-12, and free for kids younger than 5. Advance tickets are available at Metamora State Bank and The Andersons Market. Pizza Palooza will run from 5 p.m. to midnight Friday and 4 p.m. to midnight Saturday. Centennial Terrace is at 5773 Centennial Rd.

Root for the hometown at the ole' ball game in Sauder Village Saturday, when the Great Black Swamp Frogs, the Spiegel Grove Squires, and the Mansfield Independents play in the village's Vintage Base Ball Tournament. The teams will play three games using rules from the 1860s. Children can get in on the fun by running bases between games. First pitch is at 10 a.m. Sauder Village is at 22611 State Rt. 2 in Archbold.

Monroe County Fairgrounds will open its gates Sunday for the 65th annual Monroe County Fair. Sunday's activities include a horse show, parade, and car show. Monday will bring more animal shows, a goat milking contest, shooting sports awards, and live entertainment by Thunderfunk. The Scott Thompson Band and Millie's Polka Band will perform Wednesday. Admission is $5 for adults and $2 for children ages 6 to 12. Children 5 and younger are admitted free with an adult. On Monday veterans are admitted free until 6 p.m. and on Tuesday, children up to age 17 are admitted free before 5 p.m. On Wednesday, seniors 65 and older are admitted for $2 until 5 p.m. Monroe County Fairgrounds is at 3775 Custer Rd., Monroe. A benefit concert will be held Sunday from noon to 7 p.m. at Saba's Cafe at the Holiday Inn, 1705 Tollgate Dr., Maumee, for Darryl Stipes, a long-time area drummer who was murdered in June. Money raised from the event will be used for funeral expenses and reward money to help catch his killer. The cover charge is $5 and music starts at noon with Don Coats, followed by Bethany & the Bottom Line at 1, the Moondogs at 2, the Tribe Re-union at 3, Rodney Parker & Liberty Beach at 4; Josh Boyd & the VIP Band at 5, with an open stage jam from 6 to 7 p.m.
