OSU Extension Lucas County will host an 11 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. workshop Wednesday for green industry personnel as well as the general public. Topic headings include insects and pests, plant selection, diagnostics, and best practices. Continuing education credits are available for pesticide credits with the Ohio Department of Agriculture, International Society of Arboriculture, Ohio Certified Nursery Landscape, and Master Gardener volunteers. What's That Wood? The basics of wood identification will be explained in a 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Aug. 17 workshop at Toledo Botanical Garden, led by Eric McConnell, forest products specialist with Ohio State University. Discussed will be structural characteristics of wood (rays, tyloses, resin canals), growth, wood ID and utilization, the invasive species impact, historical benefits of these woods and their current uses. Fee, $35, includes materials and lunch. In addition, a kit of 24 wood species developed by Mr. McConnell will be sold for an additional $25.
