An hour-long tour of the lush gardens at the Toledo Zoo will begin at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday in front of the conservatory near the aquarium. It will focus on container gardening (plant selection, soil, fertilizing, types of containers, maintenance, and avoiding "the thugs"). There is no charge for the tour but visitors must pay zoo admission to enter. The zoo's next garden tour will be Sept. 19. Information: 419-385-4040 and toledozoo.org.

Local Foods week will be acknowledged with free workshops led by staff at the OSU Extension, Lucas County. From 10 to 11:30 a.m Tuesday, children are invited to the urban farm known as the Oneida Garden, 900 Oneida St., just west of downtown between Cherry and Lagrange streets. Discussed and demonstrated will be where food comes from, along with activities. This established garden is home to chickens, rabbits, and tanks of tilapia fish.

In other events, at 1 p.m. Tuesday in Scott High School, From Plant to Plate will be a discussion of the benefits and ways of using local food. The same topic will be discussed at 10 a.m. Aug. 17 at Mayores Senior Center, 2 Aurora L. Gonzalez Dr., in South Toledo. Information: 419-213-4241 and lucas.osu.edu.
