O'Neal, Woelfling, Fish chosen for hall

10/7/2005

PGA master professional Greg Fish, Metro Golf Association president Jim O'Neal, and the late Mel Woelfling, the city's premier amateur golfer during the 1960s, will be inducted into the Toledo Golf Hall of Fame Wednesday at Toledo Country Club.

The induction ceremonies will follow the annual Hall of Fame Tournament at Toledo CC. It is a five-player team event with each pairing featuring a member of either the University of Toledo or Bowling Green State University golf teams.

Fish, who with his wife, Raynell, owns South Toledo Golf Club, is being honored in large part for his dedication to the growth of junior golf. He was a co-founder of the Toledo Junior Golf Association and has served on its board since 1973. More recently, he founded the Glass City Girls' Tour, one of the first leagues for high school girls.

Fish is a former district junior champion who played at Bedford High School and at UT from 1967-71.

O'Neal, who played golf at Maumee High School and UT (1972-74), has been involved with the Metro association for three decades and has served as its president for 14 years. During that period, the Metro took over operations of both the S.P. Jermain Match Play Championship and the Toledo Amateur. O'Neal was awarded the Burt Silverman Award for his contributions to golf in 1995.

Woelfling, who was a dentist, won the Sylvania Country Club championship six times and captured five Toledo District Golf Association titles on five courses during the '60s. A native of Ashland, Ohio, Woelfling was captain of the Ohio State University golf team and won the Ohio Intercollegiate title in 1955.
