BETHESDA, Md.  — Brad Adamonis has earned the final spot in the U.S. Open at Congressional and will be playing in his first major.

The U.S. Open held back three spots in the 156-man field in case players qualified in the past week by either moving into the top 50 in the world ranking or becoming a multiple PGA Tour winner of the past year.

Gary Woodland, who secured his spot in the top 50 with his sixth-place finish at the Memorial two weeks ago, was at No. 40 in the ranking published Monday.

Two other spots were awarded to alternates — Zack Byrd from the New Jersey sectional qualifier Sunday night, and Adamonis from Maryland qualified Monday morning.

The U.S. Open starts Thursday with Graeme McDowell as the defending champion.
