City League roundup: Libbey's regular-season unbeaten streak ends
12/2/2000SANDUSKY - Issian Reading tipped in a missed free throw attempt in the game's final minute and Libbey missed four field-goal attempts on its last possession as Sandusky escaped with a 57-56 win last night.
The game was Libbey's first regular-season loss since the 1998-99 season. The Cowboys shot less than 40 per cent but rallied back from a 33-30 halftime deficit to take a 45-42 lead into the fourth quarter.
Jason Jones topped Sandusky with 15 points while Rick McGee scored 13 and Reading contributed 10.
Jamal Mays lead Libbey with 19 points, followed by Danny Williams's 16 and Jonathan March's 11.
Williams also grabbed 10 rebounds.
St. Francis de Sales coach Joe Suboticki found his team down by seven points to Wapakoneta after three quarters last night, so he put in his second team.
Those backups, who Suboticki says play better defense than his starters, began to press the visiting Redskins.
The deficit quickly disappeared and St. Francis pulled away to a victory.
The Knights had trailed by as much as 10 points, but solid free-throw shooting in the third quarter allowed the Knights to stay within range. St. Francis finished 29-of-37 from the charity stripe.
David Brownlee led St. Francis with 15 points. Sophomore guard Joe Franks had 12 points and Tom Donovan added 10.
Ben Boehme led Wapakoneta with 13 points, and Randy Brown and Chad Crumrine had 10 apiece.
Jamaal Jones scored 21 points and Ozzie Williams pulled down 15 rebounds as the Rebels defeated the visiting Blue Devils.
Jones, a 6-2 senior guard, had 11 of his points in the first quarter. He went 7-for-8 from the free-throw line.
Brandon Delucia came off the bench to score 10 points for Bowsher.
Matt Hall led Springfield with 11 points.
Terron Herdferd came off the bench to score 18 points and Jamell Baldwin added 17 as Waite recorded the road victory against Whitmer.
The Indians jumped out to an 18-8 lead after the first quarter and never looked back, shooting 50 per cent from the field (30-for-60). Paul Williams contributed 10 points and big Terrell Baldwin pulled down 10 rebounds for Waite, as the Indians finished the contest with a 40-24 edge on the boards against the Panthers.
Gerald Fletcher led Whitmer with nine points.
Tony Ottomanelli and Hal Munger scored 18 points each and Burke Badenhop added 14 for the visiting Yellow Jackets.
Woodward, in a hole because of a nine-point second quarter, couldn't catch up, despite 10 points by Damon Perkins and the Polar Bears' brief rally early in the second half.
Maumee outscored Rogers 20-6 in the second quarter to take a 33-24 lead and then held off the Rams' rally, with the visitors missing a field-goal attempt at the buzzer.
Eric Chapman led the Panthers with 21 points. David Perez added 14 and Sean DeWitte chipped in with 12.
Dominique Harrison led Rogers with 21 points, and David Short had 14.
Maumee, which led 39-26 with three minutes left in the third quarter, made 23 of 35 free-throw attempts, compared with 8 of 12 for Rogers.
Neal Goodloe scored 22 points and DanJuan Witcher 18 for Start, which jumped out to a 20-8 lead after the first quarter.
Kent Smith added 11 points for the Spartans.
Andy Ramsey had 15 points for visiting Clay, which clawed back within 48-37 after three quarters only to be outscored 20-11 in the final quarter. Jeff Zakrzewski added 10.
