Girls basketball: Clay holds off Bowsher; Davis hits 25

A strong Bowsher fourth quarter wasn't enough as the Rebels fell to Clay 61-56 at home last night in girls basketball.

The Eagles led 52-38 after three quarters before Bowsher came roaring back, outscoring Clay 18-9 in the final stanza.

Katie Achter (19 points) and Kristin Crawford (17) paced Clay, with 10 of Crawford's points coming in the second quarter.

Bowsher's Jazlyn Davis led all scorers with 25 points, while Lamesha Johnson added 10.

SPRINGFIELD 40, SWANTON 38

The Blue Devils built a 27-17 halftime lead and then held on to barely get past the Bulldogs at home.

Alex Bird topped Springfield with 17 points, while Jamie Phillips scored 12 for Swanton. The Bulldogs were hurt by a poor performance at the foul line, where they made only 6 of 17 free throws.

MAUMEE 67, TOLEDO CHRISTIAN 44

Reva Kerkulah came out blazing, scoring 24 points, as the visiting Panthers opened the season against the Eagles. Nikki Southerland added 12 points for Maumee.

Andrea Barlage and Alissa Toth led Toledo Christian with 15 and 10 points, respectively.

WHITMER 53, CELINA 52

CELINA - Whitmer leaned on the trio of Bridget Buss (15 points), Sara Sheperd (14), and Angie DeWood (13) in defeating Celina, as the Panthers saw a 12-point fourth-quarter lead dwindle to the final margin of one point.

Betsy Hellwarth paced Celina with 18 points.

NAPOLEON 55, DEFIANCE 45

NAPOLEON - Kayla Mengerink and Amberly Conklin notched 14 points apiece for the victorious Wildcats.

Kaitlin Hersha, a junior, added 11 points for Napoleon against Defiance, which is coached by her father, Rod Hersha. Her sister Lindsay Hersha, a senior, scored six points.

Jennifer Zeller netted 11 points and Nicole Wagner 10 for Defiance.

MONTPELIER 48, NORTH CENTRAL 29

MONTPELIER - The Locomotives chugged to a 28-9 halftime lead and coasted to victory.

Melissa Brenner tallied 11 points and Tiffany Geren 10 for Montpelier, while Danielle Finch chipped in with nine points and eight rebounds.

Amy Roth scored 12 points for North Central.

LAKOTA 51, HOPEWELL-LOUDON 23

BASCOM - Sue Brickner carried the Raiders to victory with a 16-point effort. Erica Walters chipped in with 10 points.

Amanda Hohman scored 10 for the Chieftains.

The Raiders took advantage of a big turnover margin, with only 18 to 33 for Hopewell-Loudon. Lakota shot over 50 percent from the field, making 22 of 40 attempts, but sank only 4 of 12 free throw attempts.
