Big quarter sparks Monclova Christian

Monclova Christian outscored visiting Cleveland Christian 15-2 in the second quarter on the way to a 59-28 victory in the Thunder Classic.

Matt Velazquez scored a game-high 20 points to lead Monclova Christian (4-3), while Derek Merrin had 15 and Brian Boes added 10.

Monclova Christian advances to the tournament's championship game against Cleveland Horizon today.

  • Mark Borer scored 15 points and unbeaten Tiffin Calvert outscored Liberty-Benton 20-6 at the foul line in a 47-42 victory.

  • Matt Engler scored 18 points as Port Clinton topped Edison 51-28.

  • Russell Smith scored 12 as Margaretta topped Oak Harbor 45-37. Dave Bensch had 14 for Oak Harbor.

  • Adam Morris led three scorers in double figures with 13 points and Dearborn Divine Child pulled away in the second half for a 46-31 win over Monroe St. Mary-Catholic Central. Greg Brittain paced the Falcons (2-3) with nine.
