St. Francis, Notre Dame pile up dominant leads

BOWLING GREEN - Defending champions St. Francis de Sales and Notre Dame Academy dominated yesterday at the district swimming and diving meet, which concludes today at Bowling Green State University.

Through six of 12 events, St. Francis has 207 points to runner-up Sandusky Perkins' 97. Bowling Green is third and Napoleon fourth. The top three finishers in each boys event advance to next weekend's state meet in Canton. Others may advance depending on times from other districts.

Andy Rennels edged Southview's Dan Goldberg in the 100-yard butterfly. Ryan McHugh added a win in the 50-yard freestyle for St. Francis, and the Knights' medley relay team of Chris Cabanski, Andy Rennels, Mike Melzak and DJ Mosiniak was also victorious.

Other winners were Perkins' Dan Wohl in the 200 individual medley and Bowling Green's Paul Ricard in the 200 freestyle. Wohl also finished second in the 200 free.

In the girls DivisionI meet, Notre Dame won each of the five swimming events and has 258 points. Northview and Bowling Green are tied for second with 95, followed by Celina (901/2) and St. Ursula (84).

Winners for Notre Dame included Ellen Johnson (200 free), Michelle Sliva (200 IM), Katie Carroll (50 free), Susan Johnson (100 fly) and the 200 medley relay team of the two Johnsons, Carroll and Lizzie Harr.

Only the winner of each Division I event is guaranteed a trip to the state meet.

In the Division II girls meet, Beth McDaries of Wauseon easily won the 100 butterfly, but Sandusky Perkins dominated the team competition.

Perkins' Carolyn Routh won the 200 free and Melanie Burns the 50 free, while the Pirates relay team of Burns, Brie Henning, Sara Carver and Jessica Wohl won the medley relay.

Lexington's Adeline Brym won the 200 individual medley.

The top four in each Division II girls event qualify for the state meet.
