Boys basketball roundup: Cowboys struggle with Clay

Clay gave Libbey a scare in a Division I sectional final at Waite with a 21-17 halftime lead. But the Cowboys (14-6) came away with a 53-46 victory.

Ronnell Ison paced Libbey with 13 points and Jerome Pierce and Ernie Reed each had 10.

John Nelson paced Clay with 15 and Brett McDougle added 11.

CENTRAL CATHOLIC 75, WOODWARD 55

It took Central a half to get rolling, but the Irish pulled away from the Polar Bears in the third quarter at Waite.

Central's inside duo of Chris Commons and Norman Mars did the most damage, each scoring 18 points and hauling down 9 rebounds. Dan Amato added 14 points for the Irish (18-3), connecting on four 3-pointers.

Four Central defenders (Ryne Robinson, Derek Barksdale, Matt Warner, and Zach Hartle) combined to limit Woodward's Alex Malone, the City League's leading scorer, to 12 points. Mike Fench picked up the scoring load for the Polar Bears (3-17) with 27 points.

LIMA SENIOR 52, PERRYSBURG 50

FINDLAY - The Yellow Jackets cut the lead to a single point with 11 seconds left on Mike Dhondt's sixth 3-pointer of the game.

But Perrysburg, which trailed by six at the half, was unable to complete the comeback at Liberty-Benton.

Dhondt finished with 22 points for the Yellow Jackets (16-5). Jason Eneix added 13.

Travis Walton scored a game-high 23 points to lead Lima Senior (11-11).

FINDLAY 74, BOWLING GREEN 44

FINDLAY - After a 12-12 first quarter, Findlay outscored the Bobcats 17-1 in the second.

Rob Young paced the Trojans with 16, Matt Wittenmyer added 15 and Jack Miller and LeDaniel Mangas 11 apiece.

Eric Vroman led the Bobcats with 11 points.

MANSFIELD 85, FREMONT 61

WILLARD - The Tygers broke open a close game with a 33-17 third quarter advantage.

Antonio Graves led Mansfield 18-4) with 25 and Yima Chia-Kur added 22.

Chad Clark led Fremont Ross with 18 and Luk eLyle added 16.

ASHLAND 76, SANDUSKY 39

WILLARD - Jason Phrphet scored 12 but the Streaks were blitzed by Ashland as Greg Emmons scored 28.
