St. Edward beats Bobcats in hockey semi

COLUMBUS - The 32nd goal of the season and two assists by Jason O'Bannon sparked Lakewood St. Edward to a 5-3 victory over Bowling Green yesterday in a state hockey semifinal before 3,457 fans at Nationwide Arena.

Peter Antoske and O'Bannon scored 12 seconds apart in the third period to break a 3-all tie.

O'Bannon assisted on Jim McClain's goal 12 minutes into the second and on Mark Wilson's goal at 3:55 in the third that made it 2-2.

Bowling Green (29-2-0) took a 2-0 lead off goals by Casey Horner and Andrew Jordan in the first.

David Bruder put the Eagles (34-7-2) up 3-2 with a goal 12 minutes into the third. Matt Emans' goal tied the game for the Bobcats with a goal 15 seconds later.

In the first semifinal, Curt Kassigkeit scored three goals and assisted on a fourth as Hunting Valley University broke open a 1-1 game with five goals in the second period to beat Thomas Worthington 6-1.

Kassigkeit's first goal 3 minutes into the second period gave Hunting Valley (24-11-4) a 3-1 lead. He also scored 5:35 into the period and again at 12:18 into the period. He has 30 goals on the season.

He also assisted on Hunting Valley's fourth goal of the period by Brian Hall, who also had an assist.

Larry Germovsek and Chris Murphy scored the other goals for Hunting Valley.

Gus Webb's goal for Thomas Worthington (30-7) tied the game at 1 in the first period.

The title game is today at 2.
