City: Bulldogs edge Rogers 74-72
1/24/2004Scott's Romeo Alexander took over the City League individual scoring lead with a 31-point salvo that sparked the Bulldogs to a 74-72 victory over Rogers last night at Libbey.
Vershawn Chears added 23 points as Scott kept pace with Libbey atop the league standings at 7-0. Alexander raised his season average a full point to 19.5 points per game.
It was close all the way, with a Rogers' 3-pointer that would have won the game rimming out at the buzzer.
Marquis Glenn led the Rams' upset bid with 28 points. Jarrett Wyatt and Brent Jones added 11 and 10 points, respectively, for Rogers (5-6, 3-4).
The Bulldogs (9-3) made only 13 of 20 free throws (and the Rams only 14 of 24), but Chears was 8-for-8 from the foul line when the chips were down in the fourth quarter.
Kevin Bingle scored on a put-back with 11 seconds left to lift St. Francis.
C.J. Johnson paced the visiting Knights (9-4, 5-2) with 23 points and Luke Barton added 10.
Brett McDougle poured in 25 points for the Eagles (6-6, 3-4), who trailed 34-30 at the half.
St. Francis sank nine 3-pointers to overcome Clay's 12-4 edge at the foul line.
The end of both halves spelled defeat for Bowsher.
Chris Wyse completed a three-point play with 4.7 seconds left to give the Rebels a 56-54 lead, but Todd Lindroth hurried down court and buried a 25-footer to lift the Panthers.
With 4.8 seconds to play in the first half and the game tied at 25, Justin McVicker hit a 3-pointer and completed a four-point play, then buried another trey at the buzzer to give Whitmer a 32-25 lead at the half.
McVicker hit seven 3-pointers for a game-high 22 points and Lindroth added 17 for the Panthers (5-6, 4-3).
Wyse scored 14 and Andy Smith had 10 for Bowsher (3-9, 1-6).
Nate Miles (14 points), Ernie Reed (13) and Marquel Jefferson (10) led the Cowboys (10-2, 7-0), who leapt to a 33-14 lead at the half.
Treivon Daniels paced the Central Catholic (6-6, 2-5) with nine.
Libbey hit seven of its 15 3-point attempts.
Everybody who played scored for the Titans (10-4, 6-1), led by B.J. Raymond with 26.
Brian Roberts had 10, as did Zach Hillesland, who played about 20 minutes before fouling out late in the game.
Hillesland has been rehabbing a serious knee injury.
Mike Lucas made his City League average, scoring 17 points, and Darrion Griffin added 16 for the losing Indians (6-6, 1-6).
Start (3-11, 2-5) outscored Woodward 27-2 in the second quarter to pull away.
Robbie Long and Justin Morris paced Start with 15 points apiece, while Grant Maxey added 10 points and 12 rebounds.
Long hauled in eight rebounds for the Spartans.
Theran Jones and Robert Barner led Woodward with 14 and 10 points, respectively.
