Girls basketball roundup: Defense sparks Whitmer

Whitmer put the defensive clamps on visiting Southview in the second half and came from behind for a 36-29 girls basketball victory yesterday.

Liz Tansey scored 15 points in the first two quarters as the Cougars constructed a 24-14 halftime lead. But Stephanie Bailey shut Tansey down completely in the second half and the Panthers team defense held Southview (5-9) to five points for the final two periods.

Sara Sheperd paced Whitmer (11-5) with 18 points and 10 rebounds. No other player for either team reached double scoring figures.

WAITE 74, COLUMBUS EAST 69

COLUMBUS - Gennett McCarver scored 28 points and grabbed 13 rebounds, and Waite outscored Columbus East 20-14 in the final quarter for the victory.

Shareese Ulis added 14, Shonica Knowles 12 and Lakina Cleveland 10 for the 8-8 Indians.

Jessica Slocum led Columbus East (8-8) with 20 points.

Waite hit 15 of 23 foul shots to Columbus East s 8 of 15.

NOTRE DAME 57, LIMA SHAWNEE 50

Notre Dame connected on 19 of 30 foul shots while visiting Shawnee hit 8 of 16.

Maureen Hunter led Notre Dame (10-4) with 17 points, Mallory Myers added 14 and Heather Wiczynski had 12.

Sarah Thompson scored 18 and Tori Feltz 17 for Shawnee (5-10).

SPRINGFIELD 58, LIBBEY 48

Sarah Carstensen scored 15 points to pace Springfield and Michelle Trumbull added 10.

Jana Wilson led Libbey with 16 points and 10 rebounds, while Evette Mosby added 10 points.

Libbey led 10-4 after the first quarter, but Springfield owned the second and third quarters 36-19.

BROOKHAVEN 65, SCOTT 56

COLUMBUS - Krystle Sudduth tallied 17 points for the Bulldogs who fell on the road.

Mattie Mays added 15 and Kamila Howze finished with 11 for Scott, whose starters got in early foul trouble.

ELMWOOD 51, WOODMORE 44

BLOOMDALE - Elmwood piled up a 33-21 halftime lead and held on as Kelly Wagner led the Royals with 17 points.

Megan Abbey tallied 11 points for Woodmore, including three 3-pointers.

Elmwood made 19 of 42 shots from the field to Woodmore s 16 of 49, while being outrebounded 37-22.

The Wildcats committed 21 turnovers to the Royals 13.

OTSEGO 54, LAKE 45

TONTOGANY - Julia Weisenburn scored 15 points, Jennie McVey added 13 and Ashley Murphy grabbed 13 rebounds to pace Otsego (6-9, 5-5 SLL).

Joycette Daniels scored 11 points for Lake (1-15, 0-10).

Otsego took control with a 19-9 advantage in the third quarter after leading 26-22 at halftime.

Otsego made 10 of 17 foul shots to Lake s 4 of 9.

EASTWOOD 70, GIBSONBURG 35

PEMBERVILLE - Eastwood placed three in double figures as Lynsey McIntire scored 17, Whitney Hartman 15 and Megan McCracken 11.

Mallory Fleming paced Gibsonburg with 10 points.

LAKOTA 70, GENOA 40

KANSAS - Erica Walters and Sue Brickner scored 17 points apiece and Kati Feick added 15 for Lakota (8-6, 5-5 SLL).

Nicole Nissen led Genoa (7-8, 4-6) with 22 points.

NORTHWOOD 43, OTTAWA HILLS 32

Brittany Bogart scored 11 points and Jamie Flick had 10 to pace visiting Northwood (9-5, 6-2 TAAC).

Sidney Sterling paced Ottawa Hills (8-6, 5-3) with 10 points.

Northwood pulled away after an 18-18 halftime tie.

DANBURY 48, EMMANUEL BAPTIST 44

LAKESIDE - Danbury connected on 21 of 41 foul shots while Emmanuel Baptist made 9 of 19.

Kim Zura paced Danbury with 20 points, 10 coming at the line.

Kelly Harrington paced Emmanuel Baptist with 10.

EVERGREEN 84, NORTH CENTRAL 26

PIONEER - Leslie Stong scored 26 points and became the third Evergreen player to reach 1,000 points in a career as the Vikings pummeled North Central.

Haley Keller, Natalie Creque and Emily Ford each posted 10 points for Evergreen (10-2).

Crystal Skeldon recorded eight points and eight assists for Evergreen.

WAUSEON 58, FAIRVIEW 38

SHERWOOD - Val Moxim scored 22 points, including seven from the foul line where the visiting Indians (11-3) were 20 for 27.

Lindsay Mack paced Fairview with 12 points. Fairview hit 6 of 10 foul shots.

Wauseon outrebounded Fairview 33-19 and forced 20 turnovers while committing 10.

FAYETTE 66, MONTPELIER 33

FAYETTE - Sarah Bird and Stephanie McCord scored 17 points apiece for unbeaten Fayette.

Samantha Schaffner added 13 points and Sarah Lichtenwald 12 for the 15-0 Eagles.

Danielle Finch led Montpelier with 14.

Fayette outrebounded Montpelier 37-22 and forced 27 turnovers while committing 15.

OTTAWA-GLANDORF 43, BRYAN 22

OTTAWA - Shelly Bellman scored 13 points to pace Ottawa-Glandorf. Sara Fee scored 12 points for Bryan.

FOSTORIA 61, SHELBY 34

SHELBY - Candice McQueen led Fostoria (12-3) with 21 points.

HOLGATE 43, WAYNE TRACE 39

HOLGATE - Cassie Giesige scored 13 points to lead Holgate to an overtime win.
