St. John s Jesuit won the City League tennis championship yesterday at Jermain Park, taking all the championship matches except the top two singles.
The No. 1 and 2 singles titles went to cousins James and Mike O Connell of St. Francis de Sales,
The Titans added the tournament title to the regular-season crown they had won earlier by edging the Knights 38-35.
St. John s and St. Francis shared the title last year and the Knights won the year before that.
James O Connell defended at No. 1 with a 6-1, 6-1 victory over St. John s James Davis. His first two years, O Connell had won championships at No. 2 singles.
Mike O Connell, a junior, defended his championship at No. 2 with a 6-1, 6-0 victory over the Titans Deepak Adappa. O Connell had won the title at No. 3 singles as a freshman.
Dusty DeLelles won the No. 3 singles for St. John s, defeating Justine Stebbings of Rogers 6-1, 6-1. Stebbings, an exchange student from Australia, arrived too late to compete on the girls team in the fall.
Brothers Rollin and Phil Urrutia of St. John s won No. 1 doubles, defeating St. Francis Peter Jajou and Steve Cabanski 6-7, 6-2, 6-3.
The Titans Tyler Sbrocchi and Brian Meyer prevailed at No. 2 doubles in another three-setter, 6-3, 5-7, 6-2 over the Knights Eric Lindsley and Greg Wilkowski.
