Sidelines: Tennis sectionals get under way today

The push toward the top of the state in girls tennis is in motion.

Notre Dame s Neela Vaez, Northview s Jane Pilewski and Perrysburg s Lindsay Shaeffer are among the area s top singles players competing in Division I sectionals scheduled to start today.

Vaez, who was the City League s No. 1 singles champion, and the Eagles will take the court at Jermaine Park. Central Catholic, St. Ursula Academy, Scott, Start, Waite, Whitmer and Woodward will also be represented at the sectional site.

Pilewski, who claimed the Northern Lakes League No. 1 singles title, leads Northview into sectional play at Perrysburg Junior High. Bowsher, Libbey, Maumee, Perrysburg, Rogers, Springfield and Southview are also set to play.

At Ohio Northern University, Anthony Wayne, Bowling Green, Celina, Findlay, Lima Senior, Marion Harding and Wapakoneta are in the sectional.

At Sandusky High, Ashland, Clay, Tiffin Columbian, Fremont Ross, Lexington, Mansfield and Mansfield Madison are the schools represented.

In Division II, Ottawa Hills and Port Clinton are hosting sectionals. Archbold, Bryan, Defiance, Fostoria, Lake, Maumee Valley Country Day, Napoleon, Rossford and Toledo Christian will be represented at Ottawa Hills.

Bellevue, Clyde, Edison, Huron, Oak Harbor and Norwalk are scheduled to compete at the Port Clinton sectional.

The top four singles and four doubles teams from each of the sectionals advance to the districts on Oct. 14-15.

Sectionals start

St. John s Matt Tashenberg will be among the area s Division I golfers teeing it up today and tomorrow for sectionals.

Stone Ridge Golf Course and Eagle s Landing Golf Club are hosting sectional play today. Westbrook Country Club is hosting sectional play tomorrow.

Two teams and the top two individual low scorers not on a qualifying team advance to the state tournament at Ohio State in Columbus.

The boys Division II and III state tournaments are set for Oct. 15-16, while the Division I boys and girls state tournaments are scheduled for Oct. 22 and 23.

Scholar-athletes recognized

Fourteen scholar athletes will be honored during the 22nd annual City League Hall of Fame banquet scheduled for Nov. 8 at Gladieux Meadows.

Bowsher s Michael Jewell, Central Catholic s Dan McGlynn, Clay s Brett McDougle, Libbey s Whitney Page-Marie Matthews, Notre Dame s Caitlin Schaefer, Rogers Chad Carpenter, St. Francis Jake Peters, St. John s Steve Mullan, St. Ursula s Hayley Wiemer, Scott s Rahsan Wilson, Start s Nickolas Ervin, Waite s Albert Stoner, Whitmer s J.J. Fought and Woodward s Katie Langlois will be honored for excelling in class and on the field.

NLL s Morrison honored

Northern Lakes League commissioner Larry Morrison recently received the Mac Morrison Lifetime Service Award for his longtime diligence in athletics.

Larry Morrison, who also served as commissioner of the former Great Lakes League, started working in Sylvania Schools as an administrator in 1967. He has been active in a number of organizations, including as a junior high representative on the state board of control fo the Ohio High School Athletic Association.

The award was created in honor of Robert Morrison (no relation to Larry), who is the northwest district athletic board treasurer and still remains active after more than 50 years.

Northview s Jones honored

Northview s longtime athletic director Larry Jones will be inducted into the Ohio Interscholastic Athletic Administrators Association s Hall of Fame during the organization s annual banquet Sunday in Columbus.

Jones started working in the Sylvania school system in 1966 and spent the first 17 years as a coach for basketball, softball and football at Northview, which was Sylvania High School before Southview High was opened.

Jones has held his present post as athletic director for 22 years and is expecting to step down from the job at the end of the school year.
