Griffin leads Scott to 60-49 victory

Darrion Griffin scored seven first-quarter points to get the Bulldogs started and finished with 16 as Scott topped visiting Findlay 60-49 last night in boys basketball.

James Walker added 15 and Trevor Alexander 10 for Scott (11-0), which was ranked No. 7 in the first state poll released yesterday.

Zack Kraus led Findlay (7-4) with 18 points, and Brad Sutton added 16.

The Bulldogs hit 14 of 23 free throws, while Findlay canned 11 of 13.

ANTHONY WAYNE 75,

DEFIANCE 65

Tony Zacharias led Anthony Wayne with 17 points, including 6-of-6 shooting at the foul line. Kris Koval added 14 points and Brent Papenfuss had 13 for the Generals.

Graham Wagner scored 26 for visiting Defiance, and Nate Ripke hit five treys on the way to 17 points.

TOLEDO CHRISTIAN 55,

GIBSONBURG 53

GIBSONBURG - Zach Brittenham scored 15, Tyler Boris added 14 and Toledo Christian (6-4) prevailed when the Golden Bears rallied from a 10-point deficit but missed a shot at the buzzer.

Marcus Ahle paced Gibsonbueg (8-3) with 16 and Nate Kirwen added 14.

CARDINAL STRITCH 62,

MONCLOVA CHRISTIAN 42

Eric McCloskey scored 24 points and A.J. LaCourse added 13 for visiting Cardinal Stritch (5-4).

Matt Velazquez paced Monclove Christian (4-5) with 22 and Derek Merrin added 14, including four treys.

Stritch made 15 of 24 foul shots to Monclova Christian's 4 of 9.

ERIE MASON 57,

OTTAWA LAKE, Mich. - Alex Quinones led Erie Mason with 16 points and the Eagles' balance countered two 20-point efforts from Whiteford's Jeremy Green and Jake Gust, who also had 13 rebounds.

Whiteford connected on just 17 of 37 foul shots while Erie Mason made 14 of 19.

BELLEVUE 73, FOSTORIA 61

FOSTORIA - Jordan Manlet led Bellevue with 15 points.

Marcus Hyde scored 29 for Fostoria.

UPPER SANDUSKY 88,

TIFFIN COLUMBIAN 77

UPPER SANDUSKY - Jon Diebler scored 41 to pace unbeaten Upper Sandusky. Ben Porter led Columbian with 18.

COLUMBUS - Traditional powerhouses Canton McKinley and Akron St. Vincent-St. Mary, along with Sugarcreek Garaway and Van Buren, are the No. 1 teams in the first Ohio Associated Press boys high school basketball poll of 2005.

McKinley leads No. 2 Cincinnati Moeller by 69 points and SVSM holds a 109-point edge on Akron Buchtel. The leads for Garaway (D-III) and Van Buren (D-IV) weren't as big.

St. John's Jesuit is No. 4 in Division I with Scott ranked seventh.

The D-IV poll is loaded with northwest Ohio teams as Pettisville is third, Danbury fifth and Ayersville seventh.

The poll will continue for seven weeks, with champions declared on Feb. 15.
