Sidelines: Central Catholic to induct 5 and 72 football team into hall of fame

Central Catholic will induct five individuals and one team as part of the 25th class of the school s athletic hall of fame.

Joining the hall will be Doug Doherty, Class of 1956; Gary Zolciak, 73; Connie (Mack) Glase, 77; football coach Nick Toth; the 1972 football team, and Ruth Mangas, 80, who will receive the Citizen s award.

A dinner and induction ceremony will take place April 18 at the school s Sullivan Center.

Doherty was an All-City League football player and also competed in basketball, baseball and track. Zolciak was an All-City and All-Ohio football player who later played at Michigan. Glase was a four-time City League champion in track in the 880-yard run.

Toth coached the Irish to a 40-21-1 record from 1981 through 1986, winning two Red Division championships, two co-titles, one Shoe Bowl (1982) and making one state playoff appearance (1985).

The 1972 football team was 7-1-1 and included 15 players who achieved some level of All-City recognition, four of whom also received All-Ohio recognition.

Suburban Lakes League baseball and softball coaches and Northwest Ohio Athletic League baseball coaches recently voted in preseason polls to pick favored teams for their respective league championships this spring.

The SLL baseball skippers gave the title nod to Eastwood while voting Elmwood and Lake into the Nos. 2 and 3 slots. SLL softball coaches were nearly unanimous in their choice of Division IV state power Gibsonburg as the favorite, followed by Otsego and Elmwood.

Gibsonburg won three straight state titles (2001-03) before losing 2-1 to Crestline in last year s D-IV state final.

In the NWOAL, Patrick Henry was voted the favorite for a baseball crown, with Archbold and perennial league power Bryan coming in at Nos. 2 and 3, respectively.

With his tennis match on Tuesday, Central Catholic senior Dan Amato qualified to earn his 11th varsity letter for the Irish, becoming the first Central athlete to earn 11 letters since 1958. He won 6-1, 6-1 over Connor McCouskey of Start.

Amato, a three-year starter at quarterback on the football team, has lettered four times in that sport, four times in tennis and three times in basketball. He also carries better than a 4.0 grade-point average in the classroom.

Amato was a Division II first-team All-Ohio placekicker in football last fall, when he converted 10 of his 13 field goal attempts and 27 of his 28 extra-point kicks for the 8-3 Irish.

Five area players and one coach will participate in the North/South All-Star Classic at Capital University in Columbus on Sunday.

In the Division I-II game at 5 p.m., Clay s Brett McDougle and Upper Sandusky s Jacob Diebler will play for the North team. In the preceding Division III-IV game at 3:30 p.m., Woodmore s Tyler Rosenberger, Continental s Kurtis Brown and Danbury s Jake Fanning will play for the North squad. Veteran Tiffin Calvert head coach Tony Mass is one of the North (III-IV) coaches.

City League and Blade player of the year B.J. Raymond of St. John s Jesuit, a first-team All-Ohio selection, was selected as the District-7 representative for the I-II game, but had a schedule conflict and could not play, according to Titan coach Ed Heintschel.
