Perrysburg slams Maumee
10/1/2005Perrysburg's record might be deceiving. Just ask Maumee coach John Boles.
Visiting the Panthers' Kaz-maier Stadium last night, the Yellow Jackets pounded the ball on the ground and made plays on defense, leading to their 42-14 victory.
Perrysburg had 293 yards rushing and forced four first-half turnovers in its second consecutive win.
The victory puts the Yellow Jackets at 2-4 overall and 2-1 in the Northern Lakes League.
"I'm surprised Perrysburg isn't doing better than what they're doing, to tell you the truth," Boles said. "They've got people in the backfield we knew were a lot of trouble."
Boles meant the Yellow Jackets' offensive backfield, but he could have included the defensive side, too. Perrysburg had two interceptions, including one at its goal line by senior Kyle Sell. Junior Ore Fatinikun took the other pick 45 yards for a touchdown.
Perrysburg scored five first-half touchdowns, three off turnovers, to put Maumee out of the game early. Fatinikun, also the Yellow Jackets' quarterback, passed for two touchdowns and ran for another. Chase Muir had Perrysburg's other offensive touchdown and also recovered a fumble and returned it for a touchdown.
"They wanted this game really bad, and I think it showed," Perrysburg coach Roger Frank said of his players. "I'm so proud of our kids, the way they have turned things around for the better.
"They've stuck with it, and that shows a ton of character."
To begin the game, Perrysburg scored two quick touchdowns. An eight-play, 61-yard drive was capped by Fatinikun's five-yard run to the right after faking to Ronnie Tisdale.
Four plays into the Panthers' first drive, senior Jacob Meier forced Maumee quarterback Jake Causer to fumble and Muir picked up the ball and ran 31 yards for the score.
In the second quarter, Fatinikun showed his ability to influence on both sides of the ball. At the Maumee 39-yard line, he shook off a Panther sack attempt and found Garrett Kinshaw down the sideline for a touchdown. Just before the end of the half, Fatinikun's swipe made it 35-0 Perrysburg.
The Yellow Jackets' other first-half score came just before that. Maumee drove nine plays to the Perrysburg 15, but senior Kyle Sell intercepted the ball at the goal line. On the Yellow Jackets' first play, Tisdale ran left for 49 yards, and Muir finished the drive with a 17-yard run.
Maumee's first score came on a mammoth 17-play, 69-yard drive to start the third quarter. Sophomore Ray Parry had two receptions and ran in the touchdown from eight yards out.
But Perrysburg snuffed any idea the Panthers had by coming back with another scoring drive, culminating when Fatinikun found Eric Hufford down the sideline for a 36-yard touchdown reception.
The Panthers got a bit of momentum late in the third. They recovered a fumble and then on their first play from scrimmage, Causer found Omega Roberts for a 72-yard reception for a score. Maumee then recovered an onside kick, but could not move at all on its ensuing possession.
With Maumee falling to 2-4,
1-2, Boles was disappointed with the play of his team.
"We played about as poorly as what we can play," he said. "We hadn't lost a fumble all year long."
