ND's Vaez, Perrysburg's Metzger win sectionals

Defending state champ Neela Vaez of Notre Dame breezed to a Division I tennis sectional title yesterday at Jermain Park, winning 6-0, 6-0 over Start's DeAndra Reasonover in the final.

Vaez topped teammate Morgan Bechtel in the semifinals, while Reasonover beat St. Ursula's Sarah Edwards 6-2, 6-3.

In doubles play, Notre Dame's Tara Majdalani and Meredith Morse won the title, 6-4, 6-4 over St. Ursula's Maddie Eccleston and Kelly O'Connell.

In the doubles semifinals, Majdalani and Morse beat St. Ursula's Melissa Leonard and Alexa Davis 7-5, 6-2, and Eccleston and O'Connell topped Notre Dame's Madhuri Mehta and Radhika Mehta 6-1, 6-2.

Four singles players and four doubles teams advance from each site to district play.

In the second site at Jermain Park, Perrysburg's Julia Metzger beat Libbey's Peggy Moore 6-0, 6-0 for the title.

Also advancing are sisters Sara and Shahd Haidar of Southview. Metzger beat Sara 6-0, 6-1 in one semifinal and Shahd lost 7-5, 6-3 to Moore in the other.

The Yellow Jackets doubles team of Lindsay Shaeffer and Mallory Messenger won over Northview's Jane Pilewskie and Sam Coyle.

Also advancing in doubles were Northview's Catherine Clay and Alyssa Biederman and Maumee's Lindsay Diegel and Kimberly Michalak.

In Division I at Ohio Northern, Findlay's Joy Kellogg defeated Anthony Wayne's Maggie McCormick 6-3, 6-3 in the final.

In doubles, Brooke Babcock and Katie Ammons of Findlay topped Anthony Wayne's Casey Accettola and Allyson Crawford 7-5, 6-2 for the title. Babcock and Ammons got by Columbian's Bethany Scherger and Lynae Vadalabene 3-6, 7-6, 7-5 in the semifinals while Accettola and Crawford topped Findlay's Carly Harless and Allison Lause 6-1, 6-1.

In Division II at Archbold, Haley Sauder became the school's first girls sectional champ with an 0-6, 7-6, 6-1 win over Maumee Valley's Anita Dewan. Toledo Christian's Krysta Fischer and Ottawa Hills' Priyanka Jain also advanced.

SCOTT 35, LIBBEY 14

Derek Bobo ran for two touchdowns and passed for another as Scott defeated Libbey. Bobo connected with Taron Johnson for a five-yard TD strike and ran it in from 18 and 1 yards.

The Bulldogs (4-3, 2-2 City League) also scored on a 62-yard punt return by Anderson Fletcher and a five-yard run by Michael Duhart.

Libbey (0-7, 0-4) scored on a 35-yard run by Garrell Griggs and a 30-yard fumble recovery return by James Smith.
