SLL boys, girls chase cross country crowns
10/14/2005The races for the Suburban Lakes League cross country titles should be extremely close tomorrow.
Team and individual championships will be up for grabs at the SLL meet which is being held at Walsh Park in Fremont at 1:40 p.m.
"It will be a very competitive race," said Gibsonburg coach Beth Kohler. "Some of the teams are not as deep, but there are still a lot of very talented individual boys and girls."
The Eastwood boys are the defending champs and have a strong chance to repeat. Lakota is the Eagles' chief competition.
On the girls' side, Elmwood and Lakota have run strong this season and should battle for the team crown. Gibsonburg, the defending champion, could also have a say in the outcome.
The Golden Bears captured the first SLL title in school history last year when they tied with Lakota and won on the time of their fifth runner.
Gibsonburg sophomore Ashley Fisher has broken the school record six times this season and her best time is 19:38. Senior Stephanie Hiser (20:42) and freshman Ellen Foos (20:45) are the team's No. 2 and No. 3 runners.
Individually on the girls' side, the top contenders are Fisher, Lakota freshman Carly Reese, Elmwood senior Morgan Varty, Eastwood sophomore Kelsey Lauck and Otsego sophomore Kelly Weisenborn.
The top male runners are Lakota sophomore Bryce Tiell and junior Jordan Allison, Eastwood junior Corey Johnson, Elmwood senior Alan Bowsher and Gibsonburg senior Brent Hiser.
GRIDIRON GRAPPLE: There will be only one team with an undefeated record in the Suburban Lakes League after Elmwood travels to Otsego tonight.
Elmwood (5-2 overall, 4-0 SLL) and Otsego (7-0, 4-0) both feature explosive offenses setting up another intriguing SLL showdown. The Royals have scored 31 points per game, and the Knights have averaged 37 per contest.
HORNYAK ATTACK: Genoa midfielder Cory Hornyak is just four goals shy of breaking the school record for goals scored in a season.
Hornyak scored twice in the Comets' 10-0 win over Fremont St. Joseph Tuesday night and has scored 31 so far this season. Hornyak leads the Midland Suburban Soccer League in scoring.
Hornyak has scored 81 goals so far in his career, shattering the previous school record (57).
Genoa goalie Jared Auer has a 1.00 goals-against average and six shutouts.
The Comets have already clinched their fourth straight league title.
Genoa faces Tiffin Calvert in a sectional semifinal on Monday and would need to win four postseason games to claim a district title.
COUGARS CLIMBING: The Adrian Lenawee Christian boys soccer team continues to climb up the rankings.
The Cougars (14-3-2) are currently ranked fifth in Division IV by the Michigan High School Soccer Coaches Association. Lenawee Christian has moved from eighth to sixth and now to fifth over the last three weeks.
