TIFFIN - Kidron Central Christian defeated Genoa 2-1 in a shootout last night in a Division III boys soccer regional final.

The score was tied 1-1 after regulation and neither team scored in overtime.

In the shootout, Genoa's first two shooters missed and Kidron CC's first three scored. The Comets' third shooter scored but Kidron CC's fourth shooter tallied to end it.

Senior Cory Hornyak scored late in the second half for Genoa (20-2-1) on an assist from Ben Edens. It was his 45th goal of the season and 95th of his career, both school records.

"It was tough," Genoa coach Dave Bertz said. "They were a very good team. Our kids played hard and we had more opportunites to score than they did but we just didn't finish.

"You don't get players like Cory come along very often. Not only is he so talented, he's big and strong and goes right through people. "But we do have a freshman, Cody Katschke, who scored 30 goals this year."

Jack Zimmerly scored in the first half for Kidron CC (17-4).

"We thought when we scored in the second half, we took the heart out of them," Bertz said. "You could see the momentum change. In overtime, we controlled the ball and kept it in their end, but just couldn't get it in. I'm proud of the seniors, all 12 of them. They didn't lose a league [Midland Suburban Soccer League] game in four years."

LEXINGTON - Maumee's boys were defeated 2-1 in overtime by Bay Village Bay in Division II. Maumee exits with a 17-3-1 mark. Bay advances at 16-2-2. No other detals were available.

FINDLAY - Powerful Doylestown Chippewa defeated Swanton 2-0 with a pair off first-half goals in a Division II girls regional final.

Ellyn Shaw got Chippewa of to a very fast start with a goal at the 19:44 mark and Amanda Largent padded the lead with a goal at 17:47.

"I think we were a little intimidated," Swanton coach Jim Carpenter said. "They were in the state semifinals last year, they're 20-0-1 and they've given up only six goals all year.

"In the first half they kind of dominated, and they capitalized on two mistakes we made.

"Not to take anything away from them, but it took us the first 30 minutes to realize we were making them look a little better than what they were. We played them even in the second half. It was a very physical game."

The Bulldogs (13-5-2) had reached the regional semifinals the two previous seasons, and made it to the championship game this season for the first time in school history.

"Our team had lost seven seniors," Carpenter said, "including one player [Chelsea White, who is now playing at Winthrop University] who was a four-time all-stater. To be able to come together as a team and achieve this season is a very good accomplishment for these girls."
