Erie Mason's Quinones wins wrestling title

AUBURN HILLS, Mich. - Several wrestlers from Bedford and Dundee collected medals at the Michigan state wrestling championships yesterday at the Palace, but only Erie Mason's Nick Quinones came home with an individual championship.

Quinones won the 103-pound crown in Division 3 with a 15-10 decision over Birch Run's Jared Germaine.

Chris Eggert led Dundee with a runner-up finish at 171 pounds after falling to Corunna's Michael Byrd 7-2. Pete Rendini (112), Justin White (125) and Mark Kohlman (160) took third-place finishes for the Vikings, while Jimmy Rowe was fifth (215) and Josh White seventh (103).

Jade Heiserman captured third place for Bedford in Division 1 with a 4-2 decision over Zoran Lazar of West Bloomfield at 189 pounds, but teammates James Fisher (119) and Alex Ortman (140) had to settle for fourth. Marcus Tormoehlen was fifth at 215. Nick Whitenburg was sixth at 171.

Zachery Stevens and Jeff Maddux also earned third-place finishes for Monroe. Stevens was a 3-2 victor over Dearborn Fordson's Ibrahim Abdulla at 112 and Maddux pounded Steve Herron of Clarkston 10-2. Sean Turner was fifth at 103.

In D-2, Tecumseh got a third-place finish from Ron Martin at 103 and a sixth from Vinnie Sorise.

Also placing in D-3 was Erie Mason's Kyle Gaynier, sixth.
