Sidelines: CL hall will induct 11, 83 Knight basketball team
10/25/2007The City League will add 11 individuals and one team to its athletic hall of fame at theannual induction ceremonyNov. 5 at SeaGate Centre.
For the first time, a father and son will be inducted together as former standout Central Catholic three-sport athletes.
John Keller Sr. (class of 1961) played football, basketball and baseball before being drafted as a pitcher by Cincinnati and playing in the Reds minor-league system. John Keller Jr. excelled at those same three sports at Central, played football at North Carolina, and was a member of the 1996 U.S. Olympic team handball team.
The other male athletes to be inducted are Dan Harshman (1964, football) and Bob Utter (1973, basketball, baseball), both of St. Francis de Sales, and Eddie Ziemke of St. John s Jesuit (1996, football, basketball, baseball).
The three female inductees are Kathy Szenderski (1972, tennis, basketball, track) and Karen (Kopinski) Lake (1988, basketball, volleyball), both of Central, and Michelle (Jacqua) Dean (1987, volleyball, basketball, track) of DeVilbiss.
The CL s distinguished citizen inductee is Walter Curly Draheim, who coached track and cross country at Libbey.
The honored coach will be Val Glinka, whose 1983 St. Francis squad became Toledo s first state boys basketball championship team. That Knight team will also be inducted along with Glinka.
The posthunous award inductee will be football standout Clinton Knitz (Waite, 1946).
Two longtime friends and neighbors will go at it in the trenches in tomorrow s City League football clash at the Glass Bowl between St. Francis and St. John s.
Justin Leahey and Taylor Fawley grew up across the street from each other on Homewood Avenue in West Toledo. Leahey is now a senior offensive guard for the Titans and Fawley plays defensive tackle for the Knights. Both are captains.
Leahey will take on Fawley head-to-head.
This has been the talk for some years, said Meg Leahey, Justin s mother. They will actually go against each other. They played in the yard with each other since the second grade.
Ottawa Hills senior Johnny Crooks has verbally committed to play baseball at Eastern Michigan University.
The pitcher/second baseman had a .468 batting average with 36 runs batted in and 10 home runs to help lead the Green Bears to their eighth straight Toledo Area Athletic Conference title last spring.
On the mound, he went 3-0 with a 2.49 ERA.
Crooks will join his brother, Aaron, a sophomore, on the team.
Clay girls soccer coach Scott Wamer was named the Division I district coach of the year after leading the Eagles to a 15-1-3 record.
The Eagles were ranked 10th in the state and were undefeated until a 2-1 setback to St. Ursula in the district semifinal. Clay outscored its opponents 77-17.
The Eagles won the Northwest Ohio High School Soccer League Division I title with Wamergarnering coach-of-the-year honors as well.
Senior Amanda Watson led the team in goals scored with 35. Senior Ashley Ciesielczyk had a team-high 16 assists and scored 17 goals. Senior goalkeeper Jessica Dolt finished with 51 saves.
The Bedford girls golf team finished ninth in the Division 1 state golf tournament last weekend at Grand Valley State University.
The Mules shot rounds of 381 and 376 for a total of 757. Savanna Biggs carded a two round total of 167 (83-84) to pace Bedford. Sara Porter shot 92-89-181, followed by Hannah Zebarah (202), Becca Porter (207) and Sarah Glick (217).
Monroe s Chelsie Little qualified individually and finished with a 169 (86-83).
