Clyde QB shares top honor in D-III All-Ohio

COLUMBUS - The Division IV All-Ohio football team's backfield had a distinct Suburban Lakes League flavor with Genoa's Derrick Vicars (6-foot-2, 195 pounds) and Eastwood's Jeremy Foster (5-11, 194) named to the first team.

The Division IV and Division III teams were released last night by the Associated Press.

Also named to the first team in D-IV were Fostoria offensive end Chase Munoz (5-7, 165), Wauseon offensive lineman Elliott Mealer (6-6, 300) and Delta offensive lineman Kent Corthell

(6-3, 292). All are seniors.

Named to the second team in D-III were Genoa senior offensive lineman Nate Diekman (6-4, 315), Fostoria junior quarterback Micah Hyde (6-0, 165), Oak Harbor senior defensive lineman Wade Ishmael (6-0, 232) and Ottawa-Glandorf senior linebacker John Kreinbrink (5-10, 210).

In Division III, three Clyde players and two from Napoleon were named to the first team.

Clyde placed junior offensive lineman Jarad Branski (6-2, 215), junior quarterback Alex Gillett (6-2, 185) and senior linebacker Jacob Andrews (6-1, 200).

Napoleon placed a pair of seniors on the defensive unit - lineman Nick Wagner (6-2, 220) and punter Ryan Fleck (6-5, 186). Plus, Napoleon senior linebacker Matt Niese (6-1, 195) made second team.

Also named second team in D-III were Bryan senior offensive end Andy Park (6-2, 187) and Tiffin Columbian senior linebacker Eric Hufford (6-2, 226).

Taking the top offensive honors in Division III were Columbus Eastmoor Academy running back Isaiah Pead, who rushed for 2,204 yards and 39 touchdowns, and Clyde's Gillett, who passed for 31 scores with only eight interceptions in 195 attempts.

Sharing the defensive honors were Sunbury Big Walnut linebacker Will Studlien and Canal Fulton Northwest defensive back Tony Stover.

The Division III coaches of the year are Canal Winchester's Phil Mauro (who tied a school record for wins in his first year on the job), Vic Whiting of poll champion Canal Fulton Northwest, Eric Mitchell (who went from 1-9 to 7-3 in his two years at Warrensville Heights) and Ron Lewis (guided Rocky River to a 10-0 mark and its first playoff win ever).

Unbeaten poll champion Youngstown Mooney swept the top player awards in Division IV.

Quarterback Dan McCarthy, a Notre Dame signee who will play safety for the Foghting Irish, was the offensive player of the year after rushing for 8.4 yards a carry and passing for five touchdowns during the regular season. Teammate Michael Zordich, son of the former Penn State and NFL defender of the same name, grabbed the defensive honors after piling up 132 tackles including 11 for negative yardage with four sacks.

The coaches of the year in the division were Canton Central Catholic's veteran Lowell Klinefelter (a 9-1 record, with the only loss coming in the closing seconds against Steubenville) and Darren Waters (cited for turning around Pataskala Licking Heights).
