Sidelines: City League football trophy to be named for Mattingly

City League commissioner Ed Scrutchins has announced that the league s football championship trophy will be named the Richard C. Mattingly Trophy in honor of the late former St. Francis de Sales football coach and athletic director.

Mattingly died on March 4, one day after his 84th birthday. He was the Knights head coach for 12 seasons (1960-1971), posting a 73-32-7 (.652) overall record and winning CL championships in 1965, 1966 and 1968.

Mattingly was the school s athletic director when the Knights won Toledo s first state championships in both basketball (1983) and football (1984).

I m thrilled they re going to do this, St. Francis athletic director Carl Janke said. It s a great tribute to Dick Mattingly as a person, and for his leadership in the community among the Toledo schools.

Mattingly s St. Francis teams played in the City League s first five Shoe Bowl games, which then determined the football championship. In the inaugural Shoe Bowl in 1966, the Knights beat DeVilbiss 47-6. They lost 8-7 to Central Catholic in 1967, beat Central 8-3 in 1968, lost to Bowsher 12-8 in 1969, and fell to Macomber 14-3 in 1970.

The top players Mattingly coached at St. Francis included the five Huff brothers, including Marty, who later became an All-American defensive lineman at Michigan, and Andy, who started at running back at Notre Dame.
