Service for Hilton Murphy today

A memorial service for Hilton Murphy will be at 11 a.m. today in the auditorium of the former at DeVilbiss High School, 3301 Upton Ave.

Murphy died Tuesday. He was 91.

Murphy was one of the first coaches to be inducted into the City League Hall of Fame. At DeVilbiss, his football teams were 78-8-4 and won five City League titles. His 1957 team was undefeated and outscored the opposition 315-46. In 1975, he was inducted into the Ohio High School Football Coaches Association Hall of Fame.

During his 15-year coaching career, he had a record of 121-18-4. He was commissioner of athletics for the City League from 1965-82.

The Hilton Murphy Teacher/Coach Scholarship Fund has been established through the Toledo Public Schools Foundation in his honor. The fund will award each scholarship recipient, a TPS graduating senior who would like to become a teacher/coach, $1,000 annually for

tuition expenses at a four-year college of his or her choice.
