Sidelines: Whitmer, St. Francis set for hall of fame inductions

Eight individual athletes and one team will be inducted Saturday into the Whitmer athletic hall of fame.

The honorees are Andy Boyd (1997 graduate), Todd Calcamuggio (1996), Lori Czerniakowski (1987), Matt Henry (1998), Rob Stickels (1979), Jodi Zunk (1985) and the 1979-80 girls basketball team.

Boyd was a three-year starter at quarterback. He was twice named All-Great Lakes League, and also started four years in basketball. He played football at the University of Toledo.

Calcamuggio was All-GLL first team in both football and baseball, and was honorable mention in basketball.

Czerniakowski was a two-time All-GLL guard in basketball and played outfield on a district-qualifying softball team.

Henry, a middle-distance standout in track, won seven GLL, six district, three regional and one state championship (3200-meter relay).

Stickels set school records for single-season rushing and longest run (94 yards) from scrimmage. He was named All-Ohio second team at defensive back as a senior, and was a sprinter on the track team.

Zunk excelled in volleyball, basketball and track, and was a captain in all three. She wasAll-GLL in basketball and a 300-meter GLL champion in track.

The 1979-80 girls basketball team posted a program-best 22-4 record and reached the regional final under coach Harry Will.

Also entering the hall will be teacher/coaches MichaelCarmean and Jeff Smith.

Carmean was a teacher and coach at Whitmer before becoming an administrator.

He served as superintendent for Washington Local Schools from 1994-2007, a tenure that saw the development of new soccer and softball facilities, the upgrade and installation of artificial turf and a new track at Whitmer Memorial Stadium, and the construction of a new gym and weight room.

Smith taught and coached in Washington Local Schools from 1976-2005, serving as a longtime assistant in football and wrestling, girls track and basketball.

The banquet will be held at Cambridge Place in the K-mart Plaza on Alexis Road.

Three athletes and one team will be added to the St. Francis de Sales Hall of Fame at an induction banquet on Oct. 23.

Entering are Larry Moreland (1961 graduate), Brian Burns (1985), Tom Takats (1992), and the Knights 1997-98 swimming and diving team which won a state championship.

Moreland led the basketball team in scoring and rebounding as a senior, played three years on his Air Force base team and later worked 34 years as a prep basketball official.

Burns excelled in football, baseball and hockey. Twice All-City League in football, he kicked the game-winning field goal to beat North Canton Hoover in the 1984 Division I state championship.

He a two-time All-City catcher on two CL championship teams, including the 30-2 team of 1985. He also played on the state semifinal hockey team in 1985, and later started on Harvard s Ivy League championship football team.

Takats was a standout in football, basketball and baseball. He helped the Knights to the CL basketball championship in 1991 and the CL baseball title in 1992.

He played baseball at the University of Toledo.

The 1998 state championship swim team was captained by Eric DiSalle and John Carroll.

The formal dedication of the Andy Golden Toe Toth press box at Waite s newly renovated Mollenkopf Stadium will take place on Oct. 17 prior to the football game against Rogers.

The dedication is in memory of Toth, an All-City player who co-captained Waite s last City League championship football team in 1963. He later played baseball at the University of Toledo and was employed by Toledo Public Schools as a teacher and vocational director for 30 years.

Findlay claimed its sixth consecutive Greater Buckeye Conference title with a three-game victory at Marion Harding.

The Trojans (17-3) finished 10-0 in league play, the sixth straight season of an unblemished GBC record.

And the streak may not end soon: Findlay s junior varsity and freshman teams also won at Marion Harding to complete perfect GBC seasons.

Several league titles will be on the line tonight.

Notre Dame and Central Catholic will do battle at Waite for the City League title. The Eagles swept St. Ursula in the semifinals to improve to 15-6 while the top-seeded Irish (17-4) needed three games to dispatch Bowsher.

In the Northwest Ohio Athletic League, Archbold will travel to Evergreen to determine the league s champion. Both teams are 6-0 in league play.

Hopewell-Loudon claimed a share of the Midland Athletic League crown with a win over Fostoria St. Wendelin, and the Chieftains can earn an outright title tonight at New Riegel.

But that won t be easy as H-L (18-3, 9-0 MAL) faces the Blue Jackets (20-1, 8-1).
