McNamara, Weaver win singles crowns

Megan McNamara of Notre Dame and Perrysburg's April Weaver both won singles titles Saturday in the Division I tennis sectionals held at Jermain Park.

McNamara knocked off Anna Scherting of Central Catholic 7-6, 6-1 to claim her second straight sectional title, while Weaver beat teammate Samantha Hayes 7-6, 6-2 for her first sectional crown.

The top four finishers in both singles and doubles from each sectional advance to the districts, which will be held at Port Clinton starting Thursday.

Also advancing in singles were Kerrigan McNamara of Notre Dame and St. Ursula's Megan Lankard as well as Northview teammates Jessie Coyle and Jacki Leizerman.

In doubles, sisters Morgan and Sydney Delp of Central Catholic won their sectional with a 6-0, 6-0 victory over Megan St. John and Sally Stearns of Notre Dame.

Southview's Anne Kamenny and Neha Vyas, the second seeds, defeated teammates Gena Haider and Anjoli Naik, the top seeds, 6-3, 7-6 in the finals.

Also advancing to the district were Megan Ridenour and Emily Jaffe of St. Ursula and Ashton Genzman and Taylor Smeitanski from Notre Dame as well as two teams from Perrysburg: Cammy Messenger and Megan Roberts along with Maddy Karnitis and Erin Reese.

In Ada, Ohio, senior Beth Vickio of Bowling Green won the sectional singles title with a 6-1, 6-1 win over teammate Maddie Telechy.

Lindsey Barlett of Findlay also advanced to the district, knocking off Allison James of Marion Harding 3-6, 6-2, 6-4 for third place.

In doubles, third-seeded Maureen McCormick and Kendall Krieg of Anthony Wayne pulled a pair of upsets on the way to the doubles title.

They beat top-seeded Stephanie Motsinger and Bethany Hoehner from Bowling Green 4-6, 6-4, 6-1 in the semifinals, then defeated second seeds Meghan Gray and Kelsi Wurm of Findlay 6-4, 6-2 in the finals.

In Sandusky, Elana Zalar and Kylee Ault gave Clay its second sectional doubles title in as many seasons. The pair, seeded second, upset top seeds Alexis Gedeon and Sarah Osborne of Fremont Ross 6-3, 6-1 in the finals.

Clay's second doubles team of Brenda Zachel and Rebecca Noethen advanced to the district meet, knocking off Maddie Kuieck and Sarah Gray of Fremont Ross 6-4, 6-2 to place third.

Top seeded Samantha Lagrou of Fremont Ross won the sectional singles title with a 4-6, 7-5, 6-1 victory over teammate Rachel Laeng.

ARCHBOLD - Ottawa Hills dominated its sectional, winning both the singles and doubles titles.

Sophomore Drew Fillis won the singles title for the second straight year, knocking off Bryan's Meredith McDonagh 0-6, 6-4, 6-3.

McDonagh's sister, Erin, finished third by besting Rossford's Hanah Saleh, 6-2, 6-3.

It was an all-Green Bears final in doubles as sisters Shivani and Arohi Bhatt defeated teammates Nancy Rumpf and Hannah Pike, 7-5, 7-6.

Napoleon's Mackenzie Eickhoff and Alayna Schlade took third with a 6-2, 6-0 win over Bryan's Rachel Short and Kirsten Wieland.

In Port Clinton, freshman Ashley LaFountain of Oak Harbor claimed a sectional singles crown with a 6-1, 6-3 win over Norwalk's Olivia Kasten.

Also advancing to next week's district meet were Nancy Bloor of Huron and Rachel Szabo of Port Clinton after Bloor beat Szabo 6-2, 6-4.

In doubles, Port Clinton's Chelsea Beck and Aubrey Gillman defeated teammates Jordan Van Winkle and Samantha Griffin 2-6, 6-0, 6-0 to win the sectional title.

Candice Cotton and Sarah Kerst of Sandusky Perkins finished third.
