FINDLAY - Perrysburg pulled away in the second half to upset undefeated Marion Harding 36-27 Saturday in a Division I girls basketball district championship at the University of Findlay.

Kelsea Newman scored five of her team-high 12 points in the third quarter when the Yellow Jackets stretched a one-point halftime lead into a 24-17 margin heading into the final quarter. She then added seven more points in the fourth as Perrysburg kept Marion Harding at a safe distance.

"[Newman] hit some really big shots. She's been kind of the person we've been looking towards so far in the tournament when there's big possessions and we need something to happen. She's been the one that's done it for us," Perrysburg coach Todd Sims said.

Alyssa Goins chipped in with eight points for the Yellow Jackets (17-6), and Erin Mesker added seven.

The Presidents (23-1), third-ranked in Ohio, were led by Shawnta Dyer. The senior, who will be playing at Louisville, scored 10 of her game-high 14 points in the second half, but she had little support from her teammates. Brenae Harris was the next-highest scorer with seven points.

"Defensively we played very well. The big key was tempo and keeping it the way we want to play, and rebounding, and we did both of those things," Sims said.

Perrysburg will play in a regional semifinal at 8 p.m .Tuesday at Norwalk against Brecksville-Broadview Heights (19-5), which beat Rocky River Magnificat 48-44.

"We had one returning starter, so the last thing on our mind was going to the regionals. We were worried about gelling as a team," Sims said.
