Bob Brown, who guided the Start girls basketball program to two City League championships and two trips to the Division I state final four over the past five seasons, has announced his resignation.

“I wanted to spend some time with my boys [ages 5 and 6], although I do see myself definitely coaching again in the near future,” said Brown, 41. “It was one of the best experiences a coach could ever have. Two final four trips, a state final. It would’ve been nice to win it but it was still a great run.”

Brown posted a 95-21 overall record from 2006-11, his second stint as Start’s girls coach. He also served from 1996-98 before becoming the Spartans’ boys coach for two seasons. He began his coaching career as a Whitmer boys basketball assistant in the mid-1990s and was an assistant at St. John’s Jesuit (2002-04).

“I was fortunate to work with some great kids who were extremely hard workers and people who were a pleasure to be around,” Brown said. “We had some really good talent and I was blessed to be the coach here. I’ll have those memories forever.”

Brown’s 2008-09 team (22-4) reached the D-I girls state final, and this past season his 22-3 Spartans advanced to the state semifinals.
