Anthony Wayne turnovers lead to Southview victory

Southview’s fullcourt defensive pressure proved to be a major pain for Anthony Wayne’s ballhandlers on Thursday night.
The Cougars made it hard for the Generals to take care of the basketball.
AW committed 27 turnovers in the Northern Lakes League matchup with Southview that led to a 56-49 road victory for the Cougars.
“We outworked that team for the entire four quarters,” Southview coach Tim Nottke said. “I’'m so proud of this team for buying into this.
“That’s kind of our style. If we outwork them, they’re going to turn over the ball, and we’re going to get easy baskets.”
Southview’s Taryn Stanley led the way to the NLL win by scoring a game-high 20 points, many of which came on fastbreaks. Emily Westphal added 12 points, and Lauren Huntsman finished with nine for the Cougars (13-5, 9-2 NLL).
“I think we’re playing well right now as a team,” said Stanley, a 5-10 junior. “We try to outhustle the other teams. The game plan was to outwork AW, so we can stay alone at No. 2 in the NLL.”
Yet, AW (11-6, 7-5 NLL) kept close for most of the night. Jasmine Bonivel and Megan Bedard paced the Generals with 14 points apiece.

But the Cougars, who took a two-point advantage into halftime, outscored the Generals 15-7 during the third quarter and were able to hold on to the lead through the fourth quarter.
“I give Tim (Nottke) a ton of credit because they play as consistently hard as any team we’ve faced this year,” AW coach Jeremy Terwilliger said, regarding the Cougars.
Southview took a 41-31 lead into the fourth quarter after AW was guilty of eight turnovers in the decisive third quarter when the Generals were limited to making only three field goals.
Bonivel completed a three-point play to make it 45-40 with 5:33 left. But AW pulled no closer than five points of Southview during the final period.
Southview scored the next six points and led 51-40 when Maria Pappas scored from close range with over four minutes left in the game.
“They made a lot of shots, and we missed some shots,” Terwilliger said. “We didn’t execute as well as I would have liked in the fourth quarter.”
Stanley scored 14 points in the first half to lead the Cougars in the early going. She scored seven points in each of the first two quarters, including a 3-pointer to open the game and give the Cougars a 3-0 lead.

Southview finished the first quarter with a 16-9 edge and held the lead until Bonivel scored to cap a 10-3 run for the Generals to tie the score at 19-19 with 3:37 left in the second quarter.
The Cougars regained the lead with a basket by Stanley to make it 21-19.
The Generals, who trailed by as much as eight points in the first quarter, went into the second half only down by two points after outscoring the Cougars 15-10 in the second quarter.
Bedard provided the spark in the second quarter by scoring eight of her 10 points in the first half during the period, including a pair of 3-pointers. Her second 3-pointer splashed through the nets just before the buzzer sounded to end the second quarter.
