Area’s top wrestlers competing in district competition this weekend

The area’s top wrestlers compete in district competition this weekend trying to advance to the state tournament. The top Division I teams to, Clay and Perrysburg, travel to Cleveland State.

Clay, which topped runner-up Perrysburg to win its sixth straight sectional, is sending 13 wrestlers, including seven who were sectional champions. Perrysburg qualified 11, including four sectional champs.

Bowling Green State University’s Stroh Center will host both the Division II and Division III districts.

In D-II, top teams include sixth-ranked Clyde, eighth-ranked Wauseon, Central Catholic, Oak Harbor, and Eastwood.

The D-III meet is likely to come down to a battle between second-ranked Delta and fifth-ranked Archbold of the Northwest Ohio Athletic League. Delta rolled to the D-III state team tournament title Feb. 9.

Some other top teams are Liberty Center, Genoa, Lake, Woodmore and Otsego. Genoa, the NBC champion, placed first in its sectional at Elmwood. Delta won the sectional at Archbold.

The top four placers in each of the 14 weights classes advance to the state meet in Columbus.
