BEAVER ISLAND, Mich. -- The Put-in-Bay High School Panthers co-ed basketball team defeated the Islanders from northern Michigan’s Beaver Island in a one-of-a-kind island vs. island match-up today.

The Ohio team came away with a 65-46 win over Beaver Island’s boys basketball team.

The Panthers traveled hundreds of miles from South Bass Island in western Lake Erie’s Ottawa County to the larger island located in northern Lake Michigan for today’s unique away game.

About 250 spectators filled the stands to watch the first meeting between the two teams, according to an Internet broadcast by Panthers’ announcer Patrick Myers, who provided live play-by-play commentary to accompany a video stream of the game at WPIB.com.

The Put-in-Bay team left South Bass Island on Saturday for today’s game. They are expected to leave Beaver Island by airplane today, drive back to Ohio, and return home Tuesday.
