Northview football coach's contract not renewed

Northview High School's coach Marek Moldawsky had an 8-22 overall record in three seasons at Northview, including a 3-18 mark in the Northern Lakes League.

Northview High School is looking for a new varsity football coach after Marek Moldawsky's contract was not renewed today.

Moldawsky had an 8-22 overall record in three seasons at Northview, including a 3-18 mark in the Northern Lakes League.

In each of his first two seasons, Northview posted a 3-7 overall record and 1-6 mark in the NLL. This past season the Wildcats finished 2-8 overall and 1-6 in league play.

Northview athletic director Chris Irwin said the school elected to “go in a different direction.”

Moldawsky said he anticipated a long-term rebuilding process when he took over the struggling program in 2011. He said there were 52 players in the program when he took over and he increased that number to 102, including 43 freshmen, this past season.

“I had a great time coaching at Northview,” Moldawsky said. “It was a great experience and I learned a lot. The kids were great and I feel we moved the program forward and did a lot of positive things in the community. They just wanted to go in a different direction.”

Moldawsky said he tried to make it a family environment.

“You get into coaching to watch kids become young men and you get to be a part of that process,” Moldawsky said.

Moldawsky's teams struggled against Sylvania rival Southview. The Wildcats went 0-3 against the Cougars and lost by a combined score of 137-6. Northview lost 40-0 to Southview in the season finale at Cats Stadium on Nov. 1.

Moldawsky put in 15 seasons as an assistant before becoming a head coach for the first time.

After graduating from Maumee High School in 1985 he earned undergraduate and graduate degrees from the University of Toledo and Illinois State University.

He was an assistant on the staff at the former Macomber High School. Just prior to taking over at Northview, Moldawsky served as an assistant at St. John's Jesuit for five seasons.

Moldawsky took over for longtime coach Erik Keller in February of 2011.

Keller resigned in December of 2010 after 15 seasons. Keller posted a 63-88 overall record and a 38-60 mark in the NLL. Northview had only three winning seasons under Keller, one NLL title, and one playoff appearance (both in 2005). The Wildcats were 2-8, 3-7, and 3-7 in Keller's final three seasons.

Moldawsky said Northview has won just two league titles in 53 seasons, one in the NLL and one in the former Great Lakes League.

“You can't exactly pinpoint why they haven't had more. But we were putting the infrastructure in to change that,” he said.

Moldawsky's primary profession is as a school psychologist for Toledo Public Schools. He said he is already exploring opportunities to become an assistant at another area school.

“I appreciated the opportunity at Northview,” he said. “We got the numbers up and I thought we were moving in the right direction.”
