Hoelzer, Owens’ men capture 2nd straight titles

BATTLE CREEK, Mich. — Brandon Hoelzer and Owens Community College’s men's golf team won titles for the second straight year at the NJCAA Division II Region XII tournament.

The Express advances to the national tournament May 20-23 at Swan Lake Resort in Plymouth, Ind.

Hoelzer, a Fremont Ross graduate, repeated as medalist after shooting a 76 for a three-round total of 213 to edge out Grand Rapids CC's Jared Multer by one stroke.

Owens CC’s Philippe Weppernig shot a 77 to finish third at 218, while Harrison Long shot a 72 to place fourth at 219. Other Express golfers were Timothy Dawkins (75, 239 total), Kirby Manown (80, 237), and Dru Hein (79, 237).

Owens shot a 300 as a team in the final round to finish at 882, four strokes better than Grand Rapids.

Owens coach Josh Williams was named Region XII coach of the year for a second straight year.

It will be the school’s fourth trip to the national tournament.

The Express finished 10th last year.
