Coach: Myles Holliday, first year
Last season: 3-7, 3-5 NWOAL
Returning letter winners: 11
Returning starters: Offense 8, defense 8
Schemes: Multiple option/3-4
Top players: Seniors Matt Taylor, QB; Mitch Carter, RB-LB; Kevin Denker, WR-DB; Jaime Wright, WR-DB; Travis Phillips, DB; Justin Burroughs, OL-DL; Juniors Logan Pinkelman, OL-DL.
Outlook: With a new coach, the Vikings are looking to turn things around this season.
Holliday, a Bedford graduate, spent the last eight years coaching and teaching in Tennessee. He returns to the area with 18 years of coaching experience. His career record is 38-45, including an 0-4 playoff record.
Plenty of people will have a chance to make their mark this fall. Taylor, who is one of the fastest players on the team, rushed for 134 yards seeing limited minutes in the backfield last season. Wright returns for his senior season having caught 15 passes for 145 yards last season. He's also a starter on defense in the Vikings' secondary, as well as the team's kicker and punter. Burroughs, who can bench press a team-best 350 pounds, rates as Evergreen's top returning lineman. Carter figures as a key two-way player as a running back and key interior defensive player as a hard-nosed linebacker.
"We are looking to give our community a physical football team that represents attitude, intensity and enthusiasm," Holliday said. "[We're building] a program in which they can be proud of regardless of the final score."
