All-Blade Team: Cha'Ron Sweeney

3/14/2013

2013 Girls Player of the Year: Cha’Ron Sweeney

■ School: Rogers

■ Class: Senior

■ Height: 5-3

■ Position: Point guard

■ Key stats: She was the little engine that could, literally doing everything on the court for the Rams (22-4), who reached the Division II regional final. Named All-Ohio second team and all-district and All-City League first team, she averaged 15.0 points, 4.0 assists, 2.0 rebounds, and 2.9 steals. Most importantly, she served as the team’s quiet leader, navigating the Rams to two straight CL championships and district titles. Her size wasn’t a hindrance to her accomplishing big things. She will play in college at Eastern Michigan.

■ Coach says: “She took on the leadership role for us. We played a lot of tough teams this season and whenever we needed someone to step up and lead, Cha’ was always willing to do so. She carried us, and she'd get a lot of other people involved. She’s our general and floor leader. She’s a champion and a winner in the way she’s played the game. She can break a zone on her own. She can penetrate to the basket and break down a man-to-man defense. Others on the team really looked up to her. She made the players around her better, and she’s gotten better every year.” — Lamar Smith
