3/21/2013

Two local hockey coaches were honored before the state championship game at Nationwide Arena in Columbus.

Whitmer’s Marke Waddell was presented with the Sportsmanship, Ethics, and Integrity award by the Ohio High School Athletic Association.

Waddell, who is in his ninth season leading the Panthers, was selected by the OHSAA's 24 coaches associations.

Waddell, who played at North Olmsted, also was an assistant coach at Whitmer and St. Francis de Sales.

OHSAA officials honored Waddell for his philosophy of making players work hard to improve their skills while instilling values for their post-high school lives.

Northview coach Mike Jones was named the coach of the year in hockey in Ohio by the National Federation of State High School Associations.

Jones led the Wildcats to the 2012 state title and to a state runner-up finish.

The NFHS honors 24 coaches each year in the state.
