Delta takes Division III crownin inaugural state duals tourney

Bedford senior Brandon Sunday celebrates winning the Division 1 state championship at 215 pounds.

Six area competitors won state wrestling titles, and Delta captured the inaugural state duals tournament title in Division III.

Three won titles in Division II: Central Catholic’s Alex Mossing (138 pounds), Oak Harbor’s Luke Cramer (170), and Wauseon’s Zane Krall (220).

Delta freshman Jake Spiess garnered the title at 106 in Division III.

Bedford senior Brandon Sunday (Division 1, 215) and Erie Mason sophomore Logan Griffin (Division 4, 112) won Michigan championships.

Mossing routed nemesis Ryan Skonieczny of Akron St. Vincent-St. Mary 8-1 to finish his junior season 38-4 and become the school’s second state champion. Mossing, who is a three-time state place winner, did not surrender a takedown throughout the postseason.

Cramer (42-5) waltzed through the tournament, capped by a 16-4 major decision over Clarksville Clinton-Massie’s Wyatt Running. Cramer, the 22nd state champion for Oak Harbor, was undeterred by a jump in weight of more than 30 pounds between his junior and senior seasons.

Krall (42-3) climbed one spot on the podium from his junior season, erasing a third-period deficit before registering a takedown with 37 seconds left in overtime to beat Steubenville’s Greg Moray 5-3.

Wauseon finished sixth with 61 points, and Oak Harbor was seventh with 44 points.

Spiess, a two-time junior high state champion, picked up a takedown and two near-fall points in overtime to prevail 5-1 against Woodmore junior Evan Ulinski. Delta, which had five wrestlers place in the top eight, took second behind Troy Christian (95.5 points). Delta scored 82.5 points.

The Panthers won the state duals tournament title in February, topping Massillion Tuslaw in the final, 52-17.

Sunday, one of four Bedford state placers, scored an escape in sudden death overtime to win 5-4 against Westland John Glenn’s Jordan Brandon.

Erie Mason’s Griffin defeated Carson City Crystal’s Kenneth Dittenber 5-4 in OT.

Falling in the D-III finals were: Archbold’s Logan Day (138), Delta’s Jared Mattin (160), Fostoria’s Tony Reynolds (170), and North Baltimore’s Dalton Ishmael (195).

Runners-up in D-II were: Napoleon’s Seth Beard (106), Bryan’s Shelden Struble (145), and Wauseon’s Aaron Schuette (160).

Bedford two-time state champion Mitch Rogaliner settled for second at 119.

Perrysburg’s J.P. Newton, who finished third at 152 pounds, was the highest area D-I placer. Perrysburg, with three place winners, finished 13th with 30 points. Clay, which crowned two medalists, was 12th with 31 points.

Clay crowned eight champions to repeat as Three Rivers Athletic Conference champions. Winning other conference titles were Genoa (Northern Buckeye Conference), Delta (Northwest Ohio Athletic League), Perrysburg (Northern Lakes League), and Bedford (Southeastern Conference).
