In 1938, Toledo, like the rest of the country, was digging out of the Depression. While almost 80,000 citizens were working on WPA projects, scions of industry and business were building estates in Ottawa Hills.

One such gem at 2841 Westchester Road is a meticulously restored English Tudor with a slate roof accented with copper downspouts and gutters. The home is set on 1.6 acres amidst extensive landscaping with mature and ornamental trees, shrubs and perennial beds designed by Tom Schoen. There is ornately embossed heraldry on some of the stonework and leaded art glass windows throughout.

A wonderful Old World door opens onto the foyer with a circa 30s style chandelier and a curved staircase. Slate tile flooring begins in the foyer and travels through the hall to the kitchen and dining room. A step down off the foyer lands you in the spacious living room with carved beam ceiling and built-in bookcases on either side of the fireplace. Nestled into a large alcove is the library with built-in oak and walnut bookshelves and cabinets.

The formal dining room, two steps up from the living room has a timber beamed ceiling, faux-finish walls, walnut and oak built-in buffet and breakfront as well as judge s paneling. At one end is a bowed area with multiple leaded glass windows perfectly combined with the dining room for large gatherings of family and friends.

French doors, with leaded art glass, off the living room open onto the large family room that has a built-in wet bar. There are large windows to take advantage of the view and sliders onto the large stamped concrete terrace that is encircled by natural stone low walls.

Both the family and dining rooms are well served by the 2004 Jan Merrell-designed gourmet kitchen complete with high-end Viking stainless appliances, including a six-burner professional gas stove/double oven and hood plus refrigerator.

The polished granite countertops pick up the colors from the slate floor. In addition to the expansive workspace and snack bar, there s a long counter with built in cabinets above and below, a sink and a Marvel wine cooler.

The upstairs halls complete with window seats have more than ample custom walnut built-in chifforobes and polished hardwood floors. The spacious master bedroom has a dressing room with walk-in closets, a sitting area and a reading alcove with built-in bookshelves. The bathroom is art deco elegant with vitrolite walls and ceramic tile floors.

Each of the other three large bedrooms has its own bathroom, also done in vitrolite.

For added living, the lower level provides plenty of space for a home office, a playroom/entertainment room, a large laundry room with plenty of cabinets, and an authentic wine cellar.
