  • Typically, when a builder creates a model home, it has every upgrade imaginable, or nearly so. And as you read the description, you see the home is available for a very low price, but as shown, it is moderately higher.

Builders do that to get you to upgrade. The base model may be nice, but the upgrades – the better carpet, the coved ceilings – really give it the panache you seek.

Think about that as you walk through the beautiful front door of this week's featured home, 1738 Deer Trail Drive. And then throw it all out the window, because most of those luxurious upgrades are included as standard features here.

The exterior of the home is a gorgeous combination of vinyl siding, stonework and plaster. Arches and carriage doors offer unparalleled curb appeal. The front door is a durable fiberglass stained a dark walnut with an attractive metal insert in the large window. Two sidelights invite plenty of sunlight into the spacious foyer.

In many new homes, the foyer can signal what the visitor can expect from the rest of the home: plain or opulent, sumptuous or spare. In this foyer, builder Gary Grup has shown us his hand, and it's a good one. This tall space has a beautifully coved ceiling detailed with deep crown molding. European-style sconces flank the door, and a beautiful chandelier hangs overhead. The floor is a hand-scraped and stained engineered oak. An art niche is lined in glass tiles that reflect the light.

To the right are two bedrooms, generous in size and closet space. The bedroom at the front of the home has one luxuriously bayed wall. They share a full hall bath which includes an antique basin vanity topped with granite.

To the left of the foyer is a laundry room with a sink, access to the two car garage, and a conveniently located coat closet. The garage can be expanded to a third bay.

Down the hall, behind impressive eight-foot double doors, is the owner's suite. A deep vaulted ceiling with crown molding and an ornate ceiling fan. Sliding doors lead to a covered patio.

The master bath is a showplace, with a beautiful stone tile floors and gorgeous vanities. Tall beveled mirrors reach nearly to the ceiling. An oversized jetted tub is nestled under a bay window, and granite tops his-and-hers vanities. An oversize step-in shower is completely tiled, and boasts detailed mosaic decorations. The space is rounded out by a private water closet and a large walk-in closet.

Just steps away from the master suite is the gourmet kitchen. Birch cabinets by Lilly Ann are finished in a mocha elite glaze and feature self-stop drawers. The cabinets are topped by rich ubatuba granite, perfectly complemented by the bedrock slate backsplash and glass tile trim. GE stainless appliances complete the space. Euro-style pendants illuminate the peninsula snack bar, also home to an oil-rubbed bronze faucet and custom oversize stainless undermount sink.

The nearby breakfast nook has an octagonal coved ceiling, highlighted by a distinctive chandelier. A palladian window offers a wonderful view of the outdoors, and a door nearby leads to the covered patio and the backyard beyond.

Birch cabinetry and black ubatuba granite countertops make the kitchen sylish as well as functional.

The great room is dominated by a large fireplace. While it appears to be carved stone, it is in fact stucco, with an absolute black granite surround. A deep coved ceiling here holds an exceptional art deco ceiling fan.

Stairs to the basement are marked by a wrought iron balustrade. The partial basement adds 1,000 square feet to the home, and is rough plumbed for a full bath.

The home includes far too many details to list in this space, many of which are included as standard in the price of the home. In this respect, Shadow Woods makes so many promises – and delivers, beautifully.

The home at 1738 Deer Trail Drive is listed at $257,100. The Shadow Woods neighborhood is located off Dorr Street, just east of King Road. The home will be open this Saturday and Sunday from 1:30 p.m. to 5 p.m., or by appointment by calling Julie Fisher of ReMax Masters at 419-343-8834.
