  • There are a number of stunning homes in Stone Oak, the Holland, Ohio neighborhood built around the grounds of the Stone Oak Country Club. But there are few with the style and attention to detail found in this week's featured home, 8830 Royal Oak Drive.

It is the personal home of Michael Dean, the renowned builder of upscale custom homes in our area. His 22 years of design and building experience are very much in evidence throughout the home.

The home showcases the style of the Pacific Northwest. The generous use of wood, metal, granite and slate, coupled with large windows offering a water view, are all hallmarks of this style, and they have been used to great effect here.

No detail has been overlooked in this showplace. Thanks to interior designer Donald Mackinnon, the Pacific Rim flavor extends to every corner of the home.

Brazilian cherry flooring gleams in the foyer. The rooms on this level have all been designed with great flexibility, and are ideal for entertaining guests.

The back view of the home highlights its wonderful location on the water in Stone Oak.

In the great room, a large stone fireplace with a raised hearth adds warmth to the room. At the opposite end of the room is a pass-through to the kitchen. This granite-topped counter extends into the great room, creating a dining space here. Lighted alcoves flank the pass-through, displaying artworks beautifully.

Separate seating areas adjacent to the great room include a wet bar and sliding doors to the patio. One of two patios that overlook a lake, this one is home to a built-in gas grill and a woodburning two-sided fireplace.

In the kitchen, and in fact, throughout the home, all counters are topped in granite. With design by Jennifer Diehl of Design Classics, the cabinets here are cherry, and the floor is terra cotta tile with a raku glaze. Two sinks make meal prep and clean-up a breeze. Pantries flank the pass-through on the kitchen side; their frosted glass doors add to the Pacific Northwest feel of the space.

A stairway to the second floor is hardwood with a glass balustrade topped by stainless steel for an open, airy feel. The second floor includes a generous sitting area with storage, a fitness room under a skylight with sound-deadening cork floors, and two bedrooms, each with walk-in closets and private baths.

The peaceful master bedroom is a tranquil space, with French doors leading to a pergola-topped space and a sunken hot tub.

A third level of the home contains the combination office and media room. A gas fireplace is nestled in a surround of slate tiles. Above it is a built-in flat screen television, and built-in bookcases line the rest of the wall. A hi-definition projector shines down onto a retractable movie screen. Blackout shades add to the full theater experience. A composite deck off this room offers sweeping views of the lake.

As if all this wasn't enough, we have not yet touched upon one of this home's highlights: the master suite. Located just off the foyer, the hall to this retreat is marked by a lovely fountain inset into an alcove.

The bedroom is wonderfully spacious. French doors at the far end of the room lead to the patio and that spacious hot tub. Composite decking has the look of wood with the durability of vinyl, while built-in shelves hold candles for a warm, romantic atmosphere.

The master bath is a masterpiece. Two vanities in dark wood anchor one wall; a makeup table is situated opposite. A long, low bench between the two vanities serves as storage for towels and adds to the Asian-influenced, spa-like feel of this space.

A large, glass-walled shower here has a unique pebbled floor and rain showerhead. A private water closet is quite nice, and French doors open to the walk-in closet. Extensive built-ins here eliminate the need for lots of furniture in the bedroom.

This home has so many superlatives, from the design, to the abundant use of quality materials, to the homesite itself in gracious Stone Oak. Of course, this home has received the government's highest Energy Star rating.

The home at 8830 Royal Oak is available for $820,000. It will be open for the HBA Parade of Homes beginning September 17. For more information, or for an appointment, call Michael Dean at 419-270-5900. Brokers are welcome.
