Ballot issues not madness

7/24/2012

In response to your July 8 editorial "Referendum Madness": This process is probably better than mounting a recall. Referenda give a voice to the people over and above their elected officials.

You took a position against having referenda on the ballot. But it is OK to have a referendum that meets your needs. An example is your stand on changing the structure of Lucas County government.

So who made the 'God particle'?

Physicists believe they have discovered the missing cornerstone of physics, called the "God particle" ("Inner limits," editorial, July 6). They hope this will help shape their understanding of how the universe began and how its most elemental pieces fit together.

I could have saved these scientists a lot of time and money. As Genesis 1:1 says: "In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth." God is the only one to make something out of nothing.

Cavalier attitude on marina wrong

In your July 3 article "Boaters docking for no charge at city-owned marina; Deputy mayor cites lack of manager," Toledo City Councilman Mike Craig said the "marina was never built to make money."

Is this the way a government body thinks it can run a business? This thinking builds up debt and steals money from the general fund that could be better used to repair streets or maintain parks.

Marina free? Why not parking?

A $6.3 million piece of property with free utilities for those who are fortunate enough to have a boat is available on the Toledo riverfront. The rationale seems to be that the city lacks the ability to have a manager in place.

Your article quotes Deputy Mayor Tom Crothers: "This is a public marina … and we think it's fair and reasonable to have it open for folks who want to come up the Maumee River."

The streets of downtown Toledo are public property, so it's fair and reasonable to have free parking for our cars on those streets. The amount of free utilities the city is giving away would at least partially pay for a marina manager.

ProMedica lights a beacon of hope

I have been reading letters to The Blade complaining about the lighting on ProMedica hospitals ("Flower Hospital lights undignified," Readers' Forum, July 7).

The green lighting on Flower Hospital is a beacon for travelers along U.S. 23 and at the entrance to the facility. If I was a patient coming to the hospital, that lighting would symbolize a feeling of security, and that my anxiety over having to go to the facility for an ailment soon would be relieved.

I think the signs along Harroun Road are more of a distraction than the actual signage on the building.
