Casino's gain is merchants' loss

8/2/2012

As a successful small business owner in Toledo, I see the $242 million that gamblers have dropped as a net loss to Toledo retailers, from big mall stores to small family stores such as mine ("Toledo casino's 1st 33 days put $531,617 in city coffers; Gamblers drop $242M since gaming spot's debut," July 11).

Detroit's casino beats Toledo's

Hollywood Casino Toledo pales in comparison to Motor City Casino in Detroit.

Based on my experience, Hollywood Casino has some of the worst video poker payouts in the gaming industry. The so-called wonderful buffet charges premium rates for mediocre food. The customer service personnel are not so friendly, although floor attendants and cocktail waitresses always seem to have a smile.

No one I talked to at Hollywood Casino seems to know how you can find out what complimentary benefits you may have coming, if any.

At Motor City, with the swipe of a card you know exactly where you stand, or you can find that information on its Web page.

Other than the fact that Hollywood Casino is in my backyard, why shouldn't I drive instead to Motor City, or a little farther to Windsor, where I am treated better as a customer and feel that my business is welcomed, even though I'm not a high roller?

Slot machine for Toledo an idea

With the money rolling in from Hollywood Casino Toledo and Toledo's pools, parks, and agencies in need of funds, there should be a special slot machine for special Toledo projects.

Folks could bet on which road will be repaired first, which intersection might get the next red-light camera, or which council member might run for another office.

It might be worth a try, but I wouldn't bet the farm on it.

Casino taxes could open pools

If the City of Toledo is getting an extra $500,000 in tax revenue in little more than a month from the new casino, there should money to reopen all the city swimming pools and keep them open, and still have extra money to help the city schools.
