United Way backs TPS’ Issue 20

10/14/2012
LETTER TO THE EDITOR

The United Way of Greater Toledo is endorsing Issue 20 — Toledo Public Schools' proposed levy — for several reasons.

Foremost, it is the right thing to do for our kids. Our children depend on us for their education and their futures. That is not a responsibility to take lightly.

We have seen TPS make considerable progress over the past few years. They are more open and transparent than ever before. Additionally, the school board, administration, and unions are making an honest effort to turn things around through their transformation plan.

We see positive changes and improvements. But there is still work to be done. TPS needs additional resources to allow these changes to continue.

Our partnership with TPS is yielding progress within the district's schools and, more important, in the lives of Toledo students and families. Through programs such as Mobile Eye Care, the Weekend Backpack program, Graduation Coaches, and Schools as Community Hubs, we are helping provide solutions to students and their families.

At the core is education itself. TPS must have the resources it needs so that education isn't compromised.

It is up to all of us to step up and help our kids succeed. We can no longer sit on the sidelines and expect students and schools to thrive without the funds they need to advance.

It is time to support TPS, our kids, and ultimately our community. Please vote yes on Issue 20.
