TPS board urges passage of levy

10/21/2012
LETTER TO THE EDITOR

It's a new day for Toledo Public Schools (“Yes on TPS tax,” editorial, Oct. 14). As members of the TPS board, we are standing together to share the good news from across the district, and are working diligently with the administration to overcome our challenges.

The district has embarked on a historic transformation. This strategic initiative was developed after the community asked the district to clarify its plans to move successfully into the future.

With the implementation of the transformation plan has come a new way of doing business. We are beginning to see the benefits of everyone's perseverance through the positive momentum that is building across the community.

To continue moving forward, it is imperative that Issue 20 passes. This 10-year, 4.9-mill levy will cost the owner of a $60,000 home $90.04 annually.

We realize some families are still feeling the impact of a sluggish economy. But we hope that area voters see the outcomes of our tireless efforts and are willing to invest in the future of our schools and our community.

By passing Issue 20, TPS can take the next steps of the transformation plan. They include exploring thematic high schools, expanding opportunities for nontraditional high school students to earn credits toward graduation, launching a gifted and talented program, expanding parent outreach and communication, and developing a districtwide behavior program that uses positive behavior supports.

TPS has started on a journey to reconnect with the community, parents, and other supporters. As board members, we are committed to providing the youth of Toledo a high-quality academic program that will prepare each student for success in an increasingly complex world.

Please support Toledo Public Schools by voting yes on Issue 20.
