FirstEnergy should get energized
11/12/2012The Public Utilities Commission of Ohio should require FirstEnergy Corp. to strengthen its plan for energy efficiency programs for 2013-2015 (“Keep energy efficiency first,” editorial, Oct. 31). This plan should be at least commensurate with plans of the other Investor Owned Utilities in Ohio to allow them to easily exceed the energy waste reduction targets of Ohio’s 2008 renewable energy law.
The idea of the law is to develop alternative, renewable, and energy efficiency activities in Ohio that will save our citizens money when paying for electricity, help us to have a cleaner environment, and provide more generation of electric power through clean, healthy, and renewable means.
FirstEnergy should be making plans that are well thought out to meet the intent of the law in a timely manner and not just give it lip service.

Keep speed’s thrill on the racetrack
I enjoy high-performance cars and high-performance driving. But I know what kind of driving is safe on the street, and it’s definitely not the same as in a safe, regulated racing environment (“Drivers need to know speed limits,” Readers’ Forum, Oct. 1).
In more than 40 years of driving, I’ve received one speeding ticket. It was from a red-light and speed camera for driving 10 mph over the limit. I deserved it.
If the red-light cameras force incompetent drivers to be more focused, I firmly support the use of cameras. So do most of the competition drivers I know.

Sobriety check could save lives
The writer of the Sept. 28 Readers’ Forum letter “Sobriety checks miss the point” objected to the idea of a checkpoint to nab drunken drivers. Maybe the letter writer has never lost a loved one to a drunken driver.
If the sobriety checkpoint caught only one drunken driver, who knows how many lives that could save?
More than 50 years ago my brother was killed by a drunken driver who ran a red light. I have missed him every day since.

Patriotic concert appreciated
My husband and I attended the “Patriotic Pops — A Salute to Veterans” concert by the Toledo Symphony at the Stranahan Theater on Nov. 3. The symphony was stunning, along with the wonderful performance by the Soldiers’ Chorus of the U.S. Army Field Band.
During the Armed Forces tribute, veterans were asked to stand when their service song was played. May we be forever thankful for our veterans and our country.
