Metroparks director eager for 2013

LETTER TO THE EDITOR

Like many other people, I found myself reflecting on the events of the past 12 months as 2012 ended.

On a personal note, I knew last April when I assumed responsibility as executive director of Metroparks of the Toledo Area that there would be a whirlwind of activity for the remainder of the year.

Not only would my wife and I be moving to and learning a new community, I would be director of a park system heading into a levy campaign.

The past few months have involved hundreds of introductions, dozens of evening presentations and receptions, and countless discussions of the conditions, history, and projections for the future of the Metroparks.

Metroparks is an institution with a remarkable legacy and an exciting future. I am honored to have the opportunity and responsibility to serve as director.

The passage of the levy last November will enable the completion of many projects and the continuation of services that are expected from this park district: the provision of clean, safe natural parks and open spaces.

While remaining committed to our core services, the park system will work diligently to expand its role as a contributor to the overall quality of life of the region.

As I have had the opportunity to get to know each of the major parks, I have gained a deep appreciation for the diversity of Lucas County — not only its natural resources, but also its social and cultural diversity.

I have enjoyed driving through the region’s agricultural areas, getting to know the independent villages and towns, discovering engaging urban pockets and neighborhoods, experiencing many remarkable cultural resources, and above all else, meeting so many friendly and supportive people.

As I look forward to this year, I am grateful for the support and passage of the recent Metroparks levy.

On behalf of the board of park commissioners, the past and present staff, volunteers, and patrons, I express our collective gratitude to everyone involved with this success.

Here’s to the coming year.
