Giffords needed security

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR

I watched former Rep. Gabrielle Giffords as she urged Congress to act on gun violence during a Senate hearing (“Giffords pushes for gun curbs; ‘We must do something,’ ex-lawmaker tells panel,” Jan. 31).

I, like many other Americans, was saddened and horrified by what happened to Ms. Giffords and the others who were injured or killed by a gunman two years ago. But if she had had security in place, as other members of Congress do, many of those casualties could have been avoided.

NRA admired for backing rights

I am among millions of Americans who stand by the National Rifle Association and its drive to defend our Second Amendment rights (“NRA leader opposes checks despite polls,” Feb. 4).

I admire the NRA as one of the last lines of defense for the law-abiding gun owner against rampant abuse by powerful liberal news media, The Blade included.

Your disparagement of gun ownership confirms that you have no interest in defending the common citizen. You are just another mouthpiece for the anti-American left.

Amendments must be backed equally

The 10 amendments in the Bill of Rights were created equal. You should defend the Second Amendment with all the fervor you have demonstrated in defending the First Amendment.

Single-shot guns should be fine

People who yell the loudest about preserving the Constitution fail to note that the weapons our forefathers spoke of were not assault weapons, nor any other type of automatic arms. I support the Second Amendment, but only for the type of arms that were intended at that time.

People should stop pretending that they need an AK-47 to go hunting, and accept the fact that military weapons are for the military.

NRA members should take pride in the fact that they are able to hit a target with a single-shot weapon. They shouldn’t need to spray bullets over a large area unless they are serving their country in the Armed Forces.

Against guns? Tell criminals

People who are so against gun ownership should proclaim their beliefs by putting a sign on their house or front lawn saying: I’m anti-guns and against violence.

Fear the government that fears your guns, and fear the criminals who know you’re unarmed.
