Workplace shutdowns right move

1/9/2014

This storm showed a lot of people how much their workplaces value their lives (“Record cold slams Toledo with 2nd punch from storm; Frigid weather to take bite out of economy,” Jan. 7). People should support the businesses that closed so that their employees might be safe from this storm.

I was also pleased that The Blade did not try to force its delivery people to go out in this storm. We can miss a few days of the newspaper without being deprived. I would rather the delivery person be safe.

Failure to clear sidewalks a hazard

I am in a wheelchair, so you can imagine my delight when Secor Road finally got handicap-accessible sidewalks. I find it disconcerting that many businesses between Queenswood Boulevard and Central Avenue, more than 24 hours after the recent snowfall, failed to clear their sidewalks.

I have had to wheel myself onto Secor Road, because the sidewalks are snow-covered. This is unacceptable. What happened to enforcing the law? Why aren’t these businesses fined?

A lawsuit may occur when I or someone else gets hurt because of this neglect of the law.

Plows dump snow onto clear surface

We are not allowed to shovel snow into the streets or onto city property, or we will be cited or fined (“Residents get 24 hours to clear snow, ice,” Jan. 3).

Every time I shovel my driveway and sidewalk, snowplows come down the street and plow snow back into my driveway and the sidewalk I just shoveled.

Can taxpayers ticket and fine the city trucks?

Be considerate of mail carriers

Having cleared my driveway of snow for the fifth time in a day, I thought of the plight of U.S. Postal Service carriers. People shouldn’t forget to clear a path between houses. Mail carriers’ jobs become quite difficult when snow piles up.

A clear turnpike draws kudos

I travel the Ohio Turnpike daily between I-280 and the Toledo Express Airport exit. Even with the snow and windy conditions of late, the turnpike is clear and smooth sailing. My thanks to all who keep it that way.
